About this listen

“Powerfully evocative.... Allende is at her best here; spinning words like spells, enthralling the reader with surreal visions of the New World.” (Newsweek)

A passionate epic of love, freedom, and conquest, based on historical events, from the New York Times best-selling author of The House of the Spirits and A Long Petal of the Sea.

Though she was born into poverty, Inés Suárez, a seamstress in 16th-century Spain, embodies the same restless hope and opportunism that fuels her nation’s conquest of the Americas.

Learning that her shiftless husband has vanished, Inés uses his disappearance to embark on her own adventure. It is a journey will lead her to Pedro de Valdivia - a conquistador who becomes the first royal governor of Chile - and to a love that not only changes her life but the course of history.

Chilean Historic Saga

Another brilliant book by Isabelle Allende. A history of the violent taking of the land by the Spanish. It is a story of tragedy, triumph and sadness narrated by a heroine.

History of Chile?

I have no idea if the historical details in this book are actually true, but I found it interesting. Interesting and brutal. We are preparing to go on our 4th trip to South America and I know how horribly the people were treated as the Spanish conquered Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. Much of the book rings true.

I think you would need to want to read this book if going to Chile as I am. I’m not sure it’s a book people would just pick up to read. I think the translation leaves much to be desired and the reader, though accurate in her pronunciation of all things Spanish, is quite boring.

Not her best but lovely

A bit tedious long story. But a Allende is Allende she touched a lot of human conflicts and conditions, so it’s easy to connect with her. Great narratress

Great from start to finish, perfect audible pandemic escape

Loved this historical fiction! It was perfect for my day to day pandemic routine: cook, clean & care for kids & hubby. I was transported to Chile in the 1500’s & was there with Ines for it all! Thank you for well written book and excellent audible performance, can’t imagine getting through 2020 without you all!

Another Classic by Ms. Allende

A remarkable rebel of a woman tells. her part in a history seldom mentioned; invasion, slavery, genocide, and barbarism sanctioned by the church and driven by the unbridled patriarchal passion to possess what belongs to others, justified by the lust for gold, valued more than the intelligent people who inhabit the land and don't like their new neighbors, striking back in due time with the ferocity due savage Spanish conquistadors for the atrocities they cause. Just one more reason why Allende is one of the world's most talented storytellers.

Insight into the realities of conquest of indigenous people and the horrible cruelty of the clash of cultures

Narration is exceptional and the story told with a faint Castilian accent set the stage perfectly. The first 2/3 of the book are totally worth it, especially if you’ve travelled in South or Central America and see how few Mestizo faces you encounter—-this book will tell you exactly how that came to be. Every one in Costa Rica and Chili look like everyone in Espana—-this story tells of the reason for that.

Story is beautifully paced until last quarter. As Allende tends to do— the endings unravel a bit, too many details and it bogs down the story. A messenger here and there between graphic bloody battle scenes and precise descriptions of thenjjj

amazing author

I loved her books as a teen and now 20 years later her writing is still just as captivating and emotional for me.

Disappointed

Struggled to finish this one. It's just a narration of events with no actual plot.
