About this listen

"Allende is one of the most important novelists to emerge from Latin America in the past decade." (Boston Globe)

An enthralling tale of one man's search for love and his struggle to contend with the pain and deprivation that shaped him.

Born in the Hispanic barrio of Los Angeles, Gregory Reeves grew up in poverty, survived the killing fields of Vietnam, and is now a lawyer in San Francisco. Though he has successfully survived this hard journey, Gregory’s life has suddenly gone off the rails thanks to an illusory and wrongheaded quest that has left him feeling lost and listless. To find what he is missing and what his heart truly wants, he must return to his roots. Only by excavating the past can he see the way to his future.

A sad story of the generational damage done without care or awareness. The story was long and meandering in places. Some early chapters felt like a simple dissertation of facts. But I am glad I listened to it. I would not say it hangs with Allende's best works.
Narration was great.

Hurt People, Hurting People

Strong female characters that taught men at a time when this was not necessarily acceptable.

It was very depressing in spots, but as Isabel Allende always writes so beautifully, a lovely book.

i loved it, I wish more guys read/listen this book, so much to learn about ourselves and others, and in the background are describing current events of the real world, history repeats itself and we don't learn...

...it is so current, how is it possible?!

The performance was amazing, but the story felt dragged. I did love the ending though. After you kept up with the diverse character.

Great story but too long

A lovingly told story as would be expected by Allende, this character lives a complicated yet fascinating story

A wonderful epic adventure

Isabel Allende has always been an author who’s books I appreciate to read.
This was a disappointment. The read line is, as the forwards says, a kind of biography of the author’s husband. It is interesting. The writing is unfortunately very monotonous and repetitive.

Very long
