About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Alison Weir has earned her reputation as the preeminent historian of British royalty. Now with Innocent Traitor, Weir utilizes her vast knowledge and captivating narrative style to craft her first historical novel, choosing Lady Jane Grey, the most sympathetic heroine of Tudor England, as her enthralling subject.

The child of a scheming father and ruthless mother, Jane is born during a time when ambition dictates action. Cousin to Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, she is merely a pawn in a political and religious game in which one false step means a certain demise. But Lady Jane has remarkable qualities that help her to withstand the constant pressures of the royal machinery far better than most expect.

Weir's striking novel sweeps readers back through the centuries to witness firsthand one of the most poignant tales from a time of constant scheming and power brokering.

I am dumb-struck by this book. It is brilliant. There are no words to adequately describe its magnificence.

To say it is well written, well performed and tells a complex story in exceptional way, does not tell the half of it. It is a breathtaking story and faultless in the telling.

Brilliant

Alison Weir does a fine job of creating and interweaving her multiple narrators, Lady Jane Grey and the various persons who influenced the direction of her life, including her parents, Katharine Parr, and Mary Tudor. Her Jane is a strong, intelligent young woman, and one can only wonder what might have been had she retained the crown and overthrown the influence of her Dudley inlaws. Weir creates a detailed portrait of aristocratic childhood in the sixteenth century. A captivating read, and the narrator is excellent as well.

I found the book completely absorbing. Lady Jane’s troubles as a teenager were heartbreaking. Her parents were so power-hungry. I liked the way that the author let us know what the feelings were of the other individuals in Lady Jane’s life. Even though I knew that Lady Jane would be beheaded, I still couldn’t help but hope that Queen Mary would change her mind about the death penalty.

I loved listening to the multiple narrators, especially Davina Porter (who narrated the Diana Gabaldon “Outlander” series). I also enjoyed the historical details in the book.

I highly recommend this historical fiction novel debut by Alison Weir. It is excellent!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narration was great, and I just couldn't put it down. A great look into a time that we cannot imagine; talk about women's rights! I highly recommend this book, great historical fiction.

I’m into the Tudor era history. I’ve always been fascinated with the life ot16 year old Lady Jane Grey, 9 days Queen of England. I love how the author lets the characters speak for themselves, to tell their story of events as they happened. I knew it was never Lady Jane’s fault for accepting the crown, she never wanted it. It was forced on her. I’m a fan of watching the Showtime series “The Tudors.” After listening to this audiobook, I’m surprised the series didn’t add Lady Jane! I hope someday this book would turn into a movie. I have listened to this book more than once. I’m legally blind, & I enjoy listening to audiobooks on audible, thank you, audible for having this wonderful book. I recommend this audio book for anyone whose into Tudor history or just want to have a good book to listen too. Enjoy it.

I listened to it more than once!

Terribly bleak and monitone style of writing, but I also was unable to stop! Kept hoping history would not repeat itself. But, alas, it did not.

Painfully long

I found this book so interesting in presenting the history of the Tudor era and introducing me to historical people and bringing them to life. I felt like I knew Lady Jane Gray & felt so bad for her being used as a pawn by so many people including her own parents. I will be reading many more books written about this time.

Sparked interest in Tudor era
