About this listen

Introduction to Sailing is veteran sailor Christian Williams’ candid and highly entertaining invitation to boats and the sea. Writing for new sailors of every kind, he evokes the joy of wind and water in an intimate style that begins with dinghies, which he advocates as most fun of all, and continues through cruising boats small and large and for every budget.

His invitation to join him on a tiny sunfish is itself a short course in how to sail any boat, and from there he leads us on a hands-on practical tour of daysailers, pocket cruisers, and the offshore sailboats of dreams, all informed by his own experience in dinghy and offshore racing, long-distance cruising, and survival in gales and storm. After 30,000 miles at sea Williams’ enthusiasm is contagious, and his more than 10 million views on YouTube have made him a social influencer.

Conceived as an audiobook, this extended personal conversation is an invaluable course in how to get started sailing, what boat to buy and how to pay for it, and the value of forever directing our imagination beyond the horizon ahead.

Great approach to an "Introduction". Learning to sail and about boats, like most anything, requires that we get busy doing. There are many approaches to the doing process, which this Introduction to Sailing covers in a unique way. Christian's books and videos are entertaining and informative. This introduction worked for me because he covers the big picture experience from size of sail boats to casual vs. competitive sailing for the novice to the team or solo sailing in a variety of weather conditions. Helps to know he has been there done that. I was fortunate growing up to have a father whose hobby was navigation and sailing. He started small and eventually partnered on a 30' Grampian before moving to a 34'. Many, many interesting stories/experiences including a final family sail excursion to the BVI's before us kids ... moved on. I personally would not be interested in owning a sail boat, but am definitely interested in crewing, which I did after graduating college. Thinking of doing this again on the eave of retirement. What better way to get fresh air, travel, meet new people, have new adventures and learn new lessons ... from mother nature.

Christian Williams is a living legend in the Philosophy of Sailing. With this Audiobook he shows you what type of boat is right for you and what each boat can and can not do. If you are an experienced sailor you will see many different perspectives and he will bring you back to your own decision making about which boat is right. If you are not ready to buy your first boat still listen to it. It will help you tremendously. I just came back from a sailing trip, bought the audiobook and was driving around in the countryside listening 3 hours in a row, sitting down for a coffee and thought I need to write this review. Thank you Sir! Harry

This is the real WHY for starting to sail.

Mr. Williams did a great job at writing this book. Very delightful. However, he has a very distracting habit of trailing off every sentence.

Delightful

I enjoyed this book and felt it offered a well-rounded overview of sailing. So much so I feel I am ready to book a few lessons. Having a background in aviation really helped with some of the concepts, as they are very similar. Regardless, the terminology was simple, and I walked away with a wealth of new knowledge.
