About this listen

It’s A Long Way To The Floor offers one of the best introductions to yoga. The writing is refreshingly simple, highly entertaining and most importantly, honest. David Byck portrays himself as practitioner rather than an expert, and this is exactly what endears him to the reader. He is the guy next door. He is not some super jock who was blessed by the gods at birth. He is the guy you see on the weekend mowing the lawn or taking the dog for a walk. Because of this, readers will begin to believe that what happened to him, may actually happen to them as well. Seasoned yoga practitioners will identify themselves with Byck’s stumbling blocks and be inspired by his approach to overcoming them. Novices will have a glimpse into the real world of yoga and what it holds for them. Non-practitioners will find themselves with a page-turner and a mental note to seek out the nearest yoga studio. This book is about how yoga had changed the author, a hotdog-eating, sports-loving American from the inside out. At 41, he awoke one morning to find that his body had gone on strike. The stress that had plagued him for years, combined with unhealthy habits, had sent his system into overdrive. After failing to heal his body the conventional way, David did something that went against every weight-lifting fibre in his body – he rolled out a yoga mat and began to breathe for what felt like the first time in his life. This book will take the reader on a lighthearted journey of David’s physical, mental and spiritual metamorphosis. It also looks at questions such as where and how one should practice, the difference between good and bad pain, whether yoga can be practiced outside of religion and how simply slowing one’s breath can calm a person down. David journals how yoga taught him stress management, mental strength, confidence, honesty, serenity, contentment and patience, and how he applied these lessons in everyday life. This Kindle version also contains a new Epilogue chapter bringing the readers up to date over a period of the last 10 years of David's journey. Reviews for the 1st Edition of It's a Long Way to the Floor: David does a wonderful job of describing his personal experiences of his epic journey into the world of yoga and consciousness. – Anthony (Prem) Carlisi (Ashtanga Yoga Instructor) As we are reminded by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, each man has the choice; either to go away from the safety of the known toward a church that stands somewhere in the East or to stay within the familiar and die there, inside the dishes and the glasses. My heart is forever gladdened by men who, having chosen to journey deeply into yoga, have followed through by sharing their adventure with others. David Byck recounts his quest in a uniquely personal and absorbing manner. I enjoyed reading every page. – David Roche (Ashtanga Yoga Instructor) I read the book over the last couple of days and loved it. I saw my own trials and tribulations on many of the pages. I think you do a great job explaining the process - and benefits - of building a dedicated practice. In a way that is free of pretension and over-mystification. Ashtanga is a form that can appeal to a lot of "regular guys" - - but you deftly handle the manner in which it quietly moves you from exercise to self-reflection and inevitably changes your entire orientation and belief system. I admire the honesty with which you approached the book.- Roger Smith (Author and Ashtanga Yoga practitioner) Exercise & Fitness Fitness, Diet & Nutrition Personal Development Stress Management
