About this listen

A novel of the devout young woman who became the unwilling object of King Henry VIII's ardor - and the mother of his only son.

In this third book in the epic Six Tudor Queens series, the acclaimed historian and best-selling author brings new insight to this dramatic story, showing how pure fear for her life determined Jane Seymour's actions.

Twenty-five-year-old Jane Seymour wants nothing more than to become a nun. But her ambitious father has forced her to live at court as lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine of Aragon, a fellow Catholic whom she soon comes to love and admire. So Jane is appalled when King Henry shunts Katherine aside in his lustful pursuit of Anne Boleyn, but even more so when he takes Anne's life in his rush to wed - Jane herself!

Unwilling to marry but terrified to resist Henry's advances for fear she might share Anne's fate, and propelled by her family, Jane becomes queen of England a mere 10 days after Anne's execution. She knows she must produce a male heir without fail. Her very life depends on it.

Fun fictionalization of a lesser-known story

I enjoyed the novel theories, especially as explained in the author's note. Good narrator. Recommend.

blown away

jane is by far my least favorite of the sixth wives, I know she is typically seen as the good one but it never sat right with me that she happily took the role of queen when Anne's body wasn't even cold yet. I like that this book doesn't paint her as the good queen and gives into her flaws. Even though this is fiction I did find myself having a better liking for Jane than when I first started on the series.

I love Jane

This is such a wonderful series! The history is well followed and you can tell how much the author loves the time. I’m in the process of reading them all and I have to say, I hated Anne Boleyn (the person, not the book) and it was a nice change to have the good hearted Jane Seymour’s story. On to the next one now!

The Gentle Queen

Jane Seymour has always been a queen of mystery. Was she a tool of the Court and those around her or did she have an active role in her fate?
