About this listen

The John Milton Poetry Collection includes four of his most beloved works, sharing Milton's pioneering writing on everything from politics to religion.

The first work is Paradise Lost. Milton imagines the story of Lucifer's revolt in heaven, his fall, and his temptation of Man in the Garden of Eden. Paradise Lost is a landmark in both Western letters and civilization. In this sweeping work of imagination, experts agree that Milton codified in one poem our Western mythology of heaven and hell, sin and Satan. An epic of more than 10,000 verses, Milton exalts human free will, even the freedom to do evil.

Paradise Regained is Milton's re-imagination of a Jesus Christ's baptism and temptation in the wilderness.

The third poem, "Samson Agonistes", written in the style of a stage play, is the story of Samson and his revenge. Influenced by Greek tragedies, Milton shows us Samson the once hero, now broken, imprisoned more by his blindness than by his chains.

Finally, in "Areopagitica", a letter to the Parliament, experience why Milton is accredited as the originator of freedom of the press.

This audiobook also includes a modern introduction from CSA Publishing, giving you thumbnail sketch of the author and his times to help you understand the material more deeply.

As you listen, be transported to the 17th century when political and religious tensions were high and war was imminent. Listen as Milton's works reveal his opinions on biblical themes, political division, and personal freedoms. As narrated in this poetry collection, Milton's work places him at the forefront of English writers, second only to William Shakespeare.

A new appreciation

Although I was forced to read Paradise Lost in high school, it was lost on the adolescent mind. Bored and unable to comprehend its meaning then, I now gained a new appreciation for John Milton and his style after listening to this audiobook. The reading of this epic poem was done in such a way as to bring it to life - I am a better learner when hearing the spoken word so this was a very refreshing way to ingest Milton's work.

Because this is a collection, I got the added benefit of several of Milton's other works (bonus)!

What a valuable resource for teachers to use as part of their teachings on Milton.

Talented Writer, Great Collection

Old style, poetic writing. His works reminded me a lot of when I read Shakespeare in school. Worth the listen, the narrator did really well.

Great Value!

When I was in my first year of university we had to read John Milton's Paradise Lost for my literature class. I recall being fascinated by it. When I found the John Milton Poetry Collection on Audible, I had to get it so I could listen to more of his works. These bundle deals are of great value.
