About this listen

Go back in time to the 19th-century Deep South when America hurtled slowly to a fiery eruption. Learn how a privileged, naive girl born into an aristocratic slave-holding family evolves into a woman of courage, determination, and resilience while overcoming unspeakable trials and prejudices. Theme: forgiveness.

Based on actual historical events told through fictional diary entries from 1834-1897.

I am very grateful for Linda Metcalf writing this engaging fictional book based in great part on historical events. Julia and Haller Nutt were my great-great-grandparents. I am a descendant of their son, Haller, Jr., and his consensual relationship and life with a mulatto woman named Annie Coleman. My grandfather, Oliver Calvin Nutt was their son along with his two sisters. Metcalf has brilliantly used historical documents, census reports, family letters, newspaper articles, and careful research to offer listeners a compelling story of fortitude and resilience. Julia was a fearless Southern Belle who remained strong in the face of financial losses and family upheaval to maintain her dream home, Longwood, as best she could. She valiantly dealt with her racial bigotry to transform into a very compassionate and charitable woman. Being an African American heir of the Nutt and Longwood legacy is painful and challenging, yet it confirms many of the formidable attributes I see present in my current Nutt family relatives. This is an inspiring audiobook selection!
