About this listen

A cursed druid, blackmailed by a faery queen to find a missing magic rock. Let's just hope they don't hack the druid off...for everyone's sake.

Name's Colin McCool. Folks call me the Junkyard Druid. I hate that name.

Despite my last name, I'm not "cool" like the other hunters in town. I don't run an occult bookstore, I've never owned a Harley, and I didn't inherit a family fortune passed down through generations of hunters before me.

And I kind of have this curse on me that's messed up my life.

So, things have gone to hell since I was cursed. I live in a junkyard, my mentor Finn is a heroin addict, I've got the Cold Iron Circle breathing down my neck, and the local Fae Queen Maeve is blackmailing me into doing her dirty work.

Now I'm in way over my head trying to retrieve Maeve's stolen magic rock, all while helping my friend Belladonna solve a series of murders that may or may not involve the local werewolves.

And did I mention that my girlfriend is a ghost?

If I can just get the Faery Queen's tathlum back, and help Belladonna solve the murders...

Then I just might live long enough to finish my first year of college.

The story was engaging and I enjoyed the world. The reader did a great job and I really enjoyed the couple of times his voice was enhanced, as it worked so well with the book. I also enjoyed the two stories and the way they were told. My one complaint was about character development. The main character had some, but most of them were two dimensional. I wish they were more well rounded - richer. I hope as the his continue we get more development.

Good story

I quite liked the first few books of the Iron Druid series only to be very unsatisfied with the last couple of books. When I gave this a shot, I went in with low expectations and was very pleased. This is a great overall story. The narrator does a decent job, but the writing is good enough that it overcomes the narrator’s shortcomings. Massey’s writing style is more like the style of urban fantasy writers that I’ve grown to love.

Refreshing alternative to Iron Druid.

I enjoyed listening to this book. I will have to listen to the whole series.

Good story.

A sturdy urban fantasy with a somewhat different emotional tone. Dour fun. Main character is less plagued by invincibility than many main characters in urban fantasy.

Solid

even though I am a bigger fan boy off a different druid. I am interested to see where this will go. I like the nods to other characters. Narrator wasn't bad- captured main voice well.

one beast two beast- come out come out

Have you listened to any of Steven Barnett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. But I really liked, specially the action moments , this Narrator is able to convey the emotions from the characters.

Any additional comments?

I loved this book and I think that most fans of the Iron Druid and Harry Dresden will like it! I'm curious to see the development of the story. The book one is building up its world. So far some Celtic Mythology involved, fairies, witches, vampires, werewolves. I'm afraid to give to many details and spoil the fun hehe

Great book !!!

Book one begins with what feels like chapter 20 and year 2 of this character. Very past tense when it comes to character introduction and creation. The main character and his relationships feel hollywood- all show, shallow depth.
There thus 'journaling things that doesn't identify a timeline and create great anticipation but never delivers.
I ended the book with...."What?!?!"
