About this listen
"I cannot remember the last book I loved as much... a luminous, heart-achingly beautiful love letter to friendship. Knockout!" (Josie Silver, New York Times best-selling author)
International best-seller Mhairi McFarlane explores lifelong friendships, long-buried secrets, and unexpected love in a heartfelt, emotional new novel, perfect for fans of Evvie Drake Starts Over, The Two Lives of Lydia Bird, or In Five Years.
Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday night bar trivia is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. Maybe she should have moved on by now, but she can’t stop thinking about what could have been. And she knows Ed still thinks about it, too.
But then, in an instant, their lives are changed forever.
In the aftermath, Eve’s world is upended. As stunning secrets are revealed, she begins to wonder if she really knew her friends as well as she thought. And when someone from the past comes back into her life, Eve’s future veers in a surprising new direction....
They say every love story starts with a single moment. What if it was just last night?
"[A] book I almost wish I’d written, except that would have robbed me of the intense joy of reading it... the kind of novel that will have you putting everything else on hold so you can keep turning pages until you reach its sparkling, brilliant end.” (Emily Henry, number-one New York Times best-selling author of People We Meet on Vacation)

Shamed online and ostracised by everyone she knows, Edie's forced to take an extended sabbatical - ghostwriting an autobiography for hot new acting talent, Elliot Owen. Easy, right? Wrong.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Story
Cat Kinsella overcame a troubled childhood to become a detective constable. When she’s called to the scene of a murder, not far from the pub her estranged father still runs, she discovers that Alice Lapaine is dead. Cat and her team suspect Alice’s husband, until she receives a phone call that links the victim to Maryanne Doyle, a teenage girl who went missing in Ireland 18 years earlier. The call raises uneasy memories for Cat. Though she was only a child, Cat knew that her father wasn’t telling the truth when he denied knowing anything about Maryanne or her disappearance.

Ava thinks love should be found in the real world, not on apps that filter men by height, job, or astrological sign. She believes in feelings, not algorithms. At the retreat, she's not allowed to use her real name or reveal any personal information. When the neighboring martial arts retreat is canceled and a few of its attendees join their small writing community, Ava, now going by "Aria", meets "Dutch", a man who seems too good to be true.

Story
In the early hours of a summer morning, a young woman steps into the path of an oncoming bus. A tragic accident? Or suicide? At the center of this puzzle is Adrian Wolfe, a successful architect and grief-stricken widower, who, a year after his third wife's death, begins to investigate the cause. As Adrian looks back on their brief but seemingly happy marriage, disturbing secrets begin to surface. The divorces from his two previous wives had been amicable, or so it seemed; his children, all five of them, were resilient as ever, or so he thought.

The proposition is simple: if ER nurse Claire Harper and her roommate, firefighter Graham Scott, are still single by the time they’re forty, they’ll take the proverbial plunge together…as friends with benefits. Maybe it’s the wine, but in the moment, Claire figures the pact is a safe-enough deal, considering she hasn’t had much luck in love and he’s in no rush to settle down. Like, at all. Besides, there’s no way she could ever really fall for Graham and his thrill-seeking ways. Not after what happened to her father.

So good im speechless....loved it!!!
The story builds in such a intricate way. The characters are described so well. I felt as if they were people I went to school with. There were two or three significant happenings with the plot. I thought I knew what was going to happen.. then circumstances and characters changed. I enjoyed the book. I worried, laughed out loud, teared up and cheered when snarky people got what they deserved. I am new to this author. I have read and listened to three of her books in the last month! Best read in one day.. I was hiking during the first 15 chapters and sat listening to the rest while nestled in bed on a rainy day. The book leaves me pondering my friendships and the impact on my life.

Cute, funny, heartfelt
If you’re looking for romance where you’ll be squealing with delight, this is it. The main character is absolutely hilarious, the love story is unique, and it’s surprisingly emotionally impactful. The narration is spot on. While it’s not heavy or graphic, I will include a content warning that it does cover death, grief, and child abuse (and covers them well, in my opinion). Overall, I’ll be listening again and this book will stay with me for some time 10/10 loved it!

This surprised me in the best way possible
Wow. I love the romance genre so much and have read quite a bit of contemporary work but this was phenomenal. Not only was it heart wrenching, but empowering, devastating, and incredibly wholesome. I was not anticipating the direction this novel went but I was absolutely all for it.

Amazing narration. Broke my heart a million times.
I was so captivated by this story that I kept going waaaaay after bedtime. I kept listening even though it made me cry and loudly snort-laugh and cry again. Much more than the romance I was expecting. Friendships, heartbreak, mortality - wow. The main character's grief over a sudden death especially resonated with me.
And the narrator is amazing. Spectacular. PERFECT. Normally I'm on the fence about reading versus listening to a novel; it often comes down to convenience. But I am genuinely glad I listened to this book. Maya Saroya's incredible voice and emotional reading added a depth to the character I don't think my imagination could have matched. Well done and thanks! ♡
