Publisher's summary

"I cannot remember the last book I loved as much... a luminous, heart-achingly beautiful love letter to friendship. Knockout!" (Josie Silver, New York Times best-selling author)

International best-seller Mhairi McFarlane explores lifelong friendships, long-buried secrets, and unexpected love in a heartfelt, emotional new novel, perfect for fans of Evvie Drake Starts Over, The Two Lives of Lydia Bird, or In Five Years.

Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday night bar trivia is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. Maybe she should have moved on by now, but she can’t stop thinking about what could have been. And she knows Ed still thinks about it, too.

But then, in an instant, their lives are changed forever.

In the aftermath, Eve’s world is upended. As stunning secrets are revealed, she begins to wonder if she really knew her friends as well as she thought. And when someone from the past comes back into her life, Eve’s future veers in a surprising new direction....

They say every love story starts with a single moment. What if it was just last night?

"[A] book I almost wish I’d written, except that would have robbed me of the intense joy of reading it... the kind of novel that will have you putting everything else on hold so you can keep turning pages until you reach its sparkling, brilliant end.” (Emily Henry, number-one New York Times best-selling author of People We Meet on Vacation)

Very well written

Without spoiling the exact nature of the intense feelings the main character experiences, I have to say the author did Justice to the real life experience. It was a unique and interesting story populated with characters who could plausibly have been actual people.

I found one small plot detail to be hard to believe, but this in no way diminished my enjoyment of the story.

Not exactly what I expected…

But very good! There is a death which I was not expecting based on the blurb, and I wasn’t totally sure where the story was going, but I really enjoyed losing myself in it.

Brilliant writing and narration.

I absolutely loved this book for the quality of its writing and the beautiful narration. It is not a fast paced, full-of-suspension and sex type of novel but it was a wonderful story of loss, survival and growth through life experiences.

Bittersweet

The opening scene - which is repeated near the end - was quite difficult for me to hear. So much of this book too accurately portrays what it’s like when someone leaves an infills le joke in your life. I’ve had someone like that, and my heart broke for Eve. The story is well-told, if slightly predictable, with lessons about not letting others manipulate you, about being the boss of your own life. This was a good, if bittersweet, read.

This book really surprised me!

I knew there’d be a love story, but (without giving anything away) the way it unfolded took me entirely by surprise in the most amazing and satisfying way. Mhairi McFarlane has such a talent for writing completely believable characters with so much depth. Loved the narrator as well!

So many feelings!

I absolutely loved this book. it was wonderful and painful and just magic.

I finished Just Last Night a little while ago. It was...something else. It really captured so much that I have felt and thought and wondered about and didn't know or couldn't articulate. I'm CRAZY impressed with Mhairi McFarlane's writing and the things she captures with her writing. It's never a too easy love story but stories with real depth of character and feeling.

Plot Spoiler Ahead!

I lost my 34 year old brother unexpectedly less than a year ago so I could deeply relate to what the characters were going through in this story. The pain of grief and loss was so real. The thoughts the characters shared about the loss- so astute as to feel like they were speaking to me and for me. In some small way, though these characters are fictional, I didn't feel alone in my loss. This story, through those characters, articulated thoughts and feelings I didn't know how to articulate for myself. Such a moving - almost healing listen as someone whose grieved deeply for what was, what is and what could have been.
