Internationally best-selling author Mhairi McFarlane delivers a funny, romantic, heartfelt novel perfect for fans of Josie Silver or Sally Thorne, and anyone who loves Bridget Jones!

You always remember your first love...don’t you?

If there’s anything worse than being fired from the lousiest restaurant in town, it’s coming home early to find your boyfriend in bed with someone else. Reeling from the humiliation of a double dumping in one day, Georgina takes the next job that comes her way - bartender in a newly opened pub. There’s only one problem: It’s run by the guy she fell in love with years ago. And - make that two problems - he doesn’t remember her. At all. But she has fabulous friends and her signature hot pink fur coat...what more could a girl really need?

Lucas McCarthy has not only grown into a broodingly handsome man, but he’s also turned into an actual grown-up, with a thriving business and a dog along the way. Crossing paths with him again throws Georgina’s rocky present into sharp relief - and brings a secret from her past bubbling to the surface. Only she knows what happened 12 years ago, and why she’s allowed the memories to chase her ever since. But maybe it’s not too late for the truth...or a second chance with the one that got away?

Not quite sure how this one ended up categorized as a romance but I enjoyed it a lot as a novel. I would advise those looking for steamy sex scenes to give this one a pass, though.

More general fiction than romance

I enjoyed this book very much. It was amusing, thought provoking and tender. excellent narrator. I have listened to 3 or Mhairi's books and will listen to the others soon.

Very Enjoyable

Another hit by Mhairi McFarlane. She writes witty chick-lit with a great facility with language. I was skeptical of someone from high school not recognising her, as that's a plot line in Here's Looking At You, but this book goes in many surprising places I didn't expect. Hurry up and write another Mhairi!

Loved it!

It’s always been mysteries and thrillers and I’m an avid Austen fan, partly for the historical framing but mostly for the excellent writing and the repartee between the people. I’ve tried several Romance books but lose patience with the story or the utter shallowness I’ve encountered. Thank you Audible for letting me return them. I so enjoyed this and will try another from Mhairi McFarlane.

I really liked all the characters and didn’t want it to end.

Unexpected Joy

The beginning was difficult to get through, full of self-absorbed, first-world problems. I slogged through it, hoping that the point would return to a love story between two people, as the prologue suggested.

But I eventually realized this book was more "biography"-like or dramatic fiction about one young woman, and less about the Georgina/___ relationship. That change in my expectation helped me better appreciate the book.

The cynical trajectory of the book improved in the second half, and I enjoyed it more. But I still had a couple issues that made the ending less satisfying. Even though the hero came around, the point of the story was still about Georgina only. I would have preferred more scenes within their relationship, more feels between the two of them. Almost none of that occurred.

The story is about how a woman can grow to be more authentic and true to herself, and what it means to be subtly (and overtly) bullied by manipulative, narcissistic men, as well as the culture that allows it. There are some good insights, some wonderful friends to counterbalance the anti-love, and the heroine grows in the end, sort of. But the fact that the sexist men are bad people, not rounded characters, makes that plot line less meaningful to me. Too easy to blame them and see them as black&white and immoral. The truth is much more complex.

More "one woman's story" and cultural commentary than a love story

While this was marketed as your typical romantic comedy, there was much more depth here than I expected. I really liked it!
