About this listen

Best-selling author and acclaimed historian Alison Weir brings her Tudor Queens series to a close with the remarkable story of Henry VIII's sixth and final wife, who manages to survive him and remarry, only to be thrown into a romantic intrigue that threatens the very throne of England.

Having sent his much-beloved but deceitful young wife Katheryn Howard to her beheading, King Henry fixes his lonely eyes on a more mature woman, 30-year-old, twice-widowed Katharine Parr. She, however, is in love with Sir Thomas Seymour, brother to the late Queen Jane. Aware of his rival, Henry sends him abroad, leaving Katharine no choice but to become Henry's sixth queen in 1543. The king is no longer in any condition to father a child, but Katharine is content to mother his three children, Mary, Elizabeth, and the longed-for male heir, Edward.

Four years into the marriage, Henry dies, leaving England's throne to nine-year-old Edward - a puppet in the hands of ruthlessly ambitious royal courtiers - and Katharine's life takes a more complicated turn. Thrilled at this renewed opportunity to wed her first love, Katharine doesn't realize that Sir Thomas now sees her as a mere stepping stone to the throne, his eye actually set on bedding and wedding 14-year-old Elizabeth. The princess is innocently flattered by his attentions, allowing him into her bedroom, to the shock of her household. The result is a tangled tale of love and a struggle for power, bringing to a close the dramatic and violent reign of Henry VIII.

I ordered this to complete the series. I didn’t expect much. However, this book made me understand the true depth of the new True Religion. I never had a handle on that. It also made it clear why woman had multiple husbands, the dangers of birthing a child in that era, and why young woman married old men. A truly informative book. Highly recommended.

I was expecting a boring listen.

Sad to see the series end even though this took me a little longer than usual to finish. Hood storytelling.

Almost makes you wish there was another wife.

The final Queen. The Seymour faction were ruthless for power to their ultimate demise. The Howard‘s were equally grasping. Henry VIII‘s absolute power was fueled by absolute corruption, by him and all those in power with him.

The last Queen...

I have listened to all of the books about King Henry’s wives by Allison Weir, and found them very enjoyable both historically and entertaining. It’s hard to chose one more interesting than the other.

How lucky are we to have Rosalyn Landor to read to us? I first saw her on Star Trek: The Next Generation and I knew she was someone special. The combination of Weir’s descriptive words and Landor’s rich, magnificent voice have made listening to this series a joy. I’m sad that it’s over. I am starting The Last White Rose right now.

Weir is a riveting novelist. Landor is the perfect narrator.

Katherine has been described in many other places as an older woman whom the king married more as a companion and nurse maid rather than another young wife he hoped to get a boy from. That is obviously not the case. It is fascinating to know how educated she was and to find out she wrote 3 books. It is sad that her practical view on her life decisions failed her in her last marriage. Tom Seymour was a jerk.

Katherine Parr more than we thought
