A keto diet is quite helpful when it comes to losing excess body fat without getting hungry and also improving type 2 diabetes conditions. It is a low-carb and high-fat diet, somewhat similar to other low-carb diets. Much lesser amounts of carbohydrates are taken on a keto diet along with moderate levels of protein intake. This helps in increasing the intake of fat. The reduction in the levels of carbohydrate intake helps the body to reach a metabolic state known as ketosis, where the fat from the diet and the body is burnt for deriving energy.
The word “keto” in the ketogenic diet comes from the fact that this diet allows the body to produce very small fuel molecules known as ketones, which can act as the alternative source for fuel in the body. This happens when blood sugar or glucose is present in small quantities.
When you eat very less carbohydrates or very few calories, the liver is capable of producing ketones from fat. These ketones then act as a source of fuel for the entire body, especially the brain. When you are on a ketogenic diet, the whole body starts depending upon fat as the source of fuel. As insulin levels become very low, the burning of fat can increase to a great extent. It becomes very easy to access the stores of fat to burn them off. A keto diet, if followed religiously, will have all the benefits of fasting, including loss of weight, without having to fast for the long term.
