About this listen

Autumn 1942. Hitler's legions have swept across Europe, France has fallen, Churchill and the English stand isolated on their island. In North Africa, Rommel and his Panzers have routed the British Eighth Army and stand poised to overrun Egypt, Suez, and the oil fields of the Middle East. With the outcome of the war hanging in the balance, the British hatch a desperate plan: send a small, highly mobile, and heavily armed force behind German lines to strike the blow that will stop the Afrika Korps in its tracks.

Steven Pressfield brings to life the flair, agility, and daring of this extraordinary historical commando unit, the Long Range Desert Group. He describes in detail the tactics, weaponry, and specialized skills needed for combat under extreme desert conditions. He captures, too, the camaraderie of this "band of brothers" as they perform the acts of courage and cunning crucial to the Allies' victory in North Africa. As in his acclaimed earlier novels, Pressfield combines historical accuracy and edge-of-your-seat battle scenes to create riveting fiction.

Critic reviews

"Crisp writing carries readers through success, failure and a final face-to-face encounter with Rommel that's no less exciting for knowing the outcome." ( Publishers Weekly)

My Introduction to Pressfield

Alfred Molina has a good voice for audiobooks. Easiest book to listen to of the ones I’ve experienced so far. The material was unbelievably engaging and I got lost in the narrative and forgot I was listening to historical fiction. I was sold on the main character being a historical figure. I’ve heard Pressfield is adept at his craft and can only support that assessment now. He’s been added to list of authors I want to read more from.

like my old Buick Electra on a -20 degree day

This story started like my old Buick Electra on a -20 degree day in Wisconsin. But once it warmed up it gave me a good ride and even hit overdrive, pushing me past the speed limit into the throes of war with complex, thoughtful warriors I learned to care about.

Mostly Fiction

I liked the story, but I was confused about what was fiction and what wasn’t. At the end it is explained better than at the beginning. It is a book in a book and both books are fictional.

Humble Hero

"Killing Rommel" presents a straightforward personal account of one limited-scale special operations campaign in North Africa during WWII, written in the style of a memoir. Mr. Pressfield presents the unassuming courage and emotional conflicts of one man in a way that enlightens without seeming overbearing. He also portrays perfectly the true randomness of armed conflict. The pacing was just right and the Kiwi, British and German characters were believable. This is a great listen if you are looking for inspiration in the face of trying circumstances.

One of my favorite audible fiction books

Moves a little slow at first but story is engrossing afterwards. Great narration also. One of Pressfields best.

I couldn’t put it down

I loved the detail and felt it was just the right amount. There were times I felt like I would tear up. And others I felt like cheering. The narration was perfect and I wouldn’t want it done any other way. Bravo!

Remember it is fiction

The book is excellent. It feels quite real, especially due to its use of a very believable frame tale. However, if I am understanding the author's introduction correctly, the main character was an amalgam of other people.
