About this listen

A story of hope and second chances in Regency London narrated by acclaimed actress Mary Sarah. Kitty Bennet is finished with love and romance. She lost her one-time fiancé in the Battle of Waterloo, and in the battle's aftermath saw more ugliness and suffering than she could bear. Staying with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner in London for the winter, Kitty throws her energies into finding a husband for her hopelessly bookish sister Mary, and discovering whatever mysterious trouble is worrying her sister Jane. But then she meets Mr. Lancelot Dalton, a handsome clergyman with a shadowed past - and discovers that though she may be finished with love, love may not be at all finished with her.

Ms. Elliot does a wonderful job of honoring the original work of Jane Austen while creating a world of her own. I have adored getting to know Kitty and watch her grow into a complicated and admirable heroine.

Lovely Story

I read this novel a while back but chose to listen to it as well. The story is wonderful. I was skeptical as to how Kitty could be made into a sympathetic character and this pastiche does a wonderful job of doing just that.

The performance of the novel is very good. The only noticeable issues I came across were minor. At one point, the narrator (Mary Sarah) refers to Kitty when she meant Mary ( I doubt the character Kitty would refer to herself in the third person). There was also one point where she continues to use an accent meant to express the dialogue of the midwife brought in to assist Jane. Even though the speaker changed, Ms. Sarah continued to use the midwife’s accent. These issues, although noticeable, do not detract from the enjoyment of the story.

I was extremely pleased with the audio version of this book.

Wonderfully done!
