Publisher's summary

Lady Violet Belmaine is just finding her balance as a widow who has recently put off mourning when she’s summoned to the family seat to celebrate a sibling’s wedding. Hugh St. Sevier’s escort makes the journey somewhat bearable, while Sebastian MacHeath’s presence among the guests is a more dubious blessing.

Violet is managing as best she can with her stubborn Papa, difficult brothers, and well-meaning aunties, when the bride goes missing. Tempers flare, old secrets come out at the worst times, and Violet can rely on only St. Sevier and Sebastian to help her find the bride…until she discovers that St. Sevier was the last person seen with the missing lady!

I’m enjoying this new series

I’m a series fan and love the subtle development of relationships at the speed of real life. Of course in real life we don’t solve mysteries every few months but I like mysteries too so I’m eager to get the next installment.

Unlike Burrowes’ other books we aren’t seeing the hero and heroine repairing to the bedroom less than halfway through the book. We have a widow here and two suitors. Having them repair to the bedroom would be too morally icky for my comfort. So in the future one of the suitors will have to win first place. But who will it be? I know who I want it to be.

Nother outing with great characters but no story

I love the three main characters, but the navel gazing is getting to be a bit much. in this episode, we meet Violets family - all poorly realized and we get to see what a pompous ass he really is - but that was well established in the first book.

Violet's brother is marrying a sweet young thing who dusappears. The other people assembled for the wedding wander around occassionally trying to find her in between naps. baths and meals for THREE DAYS none too concerned about her fate until a rasom note shows up. She gets rescued, sordid family details are uncovered. A thoroughly unlikely reaction and resolution once the culprit is identified - the end.

Along the way. we get treated to more of the "love" story to the point that it gets gets tedious. Violet and Sebastian were unfairly separated, he went to war and she was in a miserable marriage - what more needs to be said - except what they want to do now - a topic that never gets touched.

I know that they are drawing this out deliberately since then we all have to pay for 4 short books rather than 1 decent novel. The result is a LOT of filler and little editing. This isn't the only author doing this. I for one resent it and if audible is going to play games like this. I may unsubscribe.

Meh

Even the kidnapping wasn’t that exciting. And the potential for romance was flat. Both men were described beautifully and either one would have made a good partner but in the end the men were better off being good friends to each other rather than being the potential partner to the heroine. If is hinted that there is a second book but I’m not sure I’m interested.
