About this listen

A contemporary American classic - a poignant and hilarious tale of baseball, hero worship, eccentric behavior, and unlikely friendship

Last Days of Summer is the story of Joey Margolis, neighborhood punching bag, growing up goofy and mostly fatherless in Brooklyn in the early 1940s. A boy looking for a hero, Joey decides to latch on to Charlie Banks, the all-star third basemen for the New York Giants. But Joey's chosen champion doesn't exactly welcome the extreme attention of a persistent young fan with an overactive imagination. Then again, this strange, needy kid might be exactly what Banks needs.

BRILLIANT!

By far one of the most innovative coming of age stories ever written and brouggt to life with a solid narrative performance. This book is stylized but comes off remarkably well as an audiobook. You'll laugh, you'll cry amd you will want more. I understand this book is being made into a Broadway musical. I cannot wait!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AUDIOBOOK. The story is one of the best ever and when you theow in baseball as well? A HOME RUN!

One of the best books I have ever read

I like everything about this book. I don’t even want to tell you how good it is because I don’t want to ruin the experience for anyone.

So good, so sad!

I adore this book, but it breaks my heart every time I hear it! I'll listen again and again, though!

Joey’s Eloquent

This is one of my all time favorite books. The story is so well written and I cannot ever put it down when I start rereading it. That’s why I was deeply disappointed with the narrator. He showed very little emotion and character distinction as he read this. I had hoped he would have emphasized Joey’s character in the letters they wrote. Alas, he was mundane and dull.

What an Achievement

Wow. A brilliant and nearly flawless account of childhood heroes and dreams come true and humor, subtle and bold. The story flows superbly on written accounts by all participants, completely engaging, wholly satisfying. Narrator was excellent, too.

A must read!

Loved, loved this book. At first I thought the narrator wasn’t going to cut it, but the more you listen the clearer it becomes that he was perfect for this book! This heartfelt story will have you laughing and crying at the same time. And if you haven’t read Steve Kluger’s other book on Audible, My Most Excellent Year, read that one too!!!

Hard to Follow

This audio book lacks emotion and good diction to make it enjoyable. I found it very difficult to understand the story, even when I tried to follow intently. It almost seems like AI is reading the story.
