About this listen

Antarctica, June 6th, 1998: 23-year-old Matt Lewis has just started his dream job: an observer aboard a deep-sea fishing boat. As the crew haul in their lines for the day, the waves seem bigger than usual - they are casting shadows on the deck. A storm is brewing. What follows is an astonishing story of courage and tragedy. Lewis leads the escape onto three life rafts, where the battle for survival begins.

Better than The Perfect Storm!

Where does Last Man Off rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book (and its incredibly agile NARRATOR) instantly moved near the top of my all-time nonfiction list. I bet Sebastian Junger is proud of what Matt Lewis has not only survived, but proud of the way he spun his tale here, keeping the reader/listener ARC-WELDED to the material.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There's not an uninteresting character IN this book, especially as described by Matt Lewis, and sublimely rendered by this PHENOMENAL narrator, Malcolm Hamilton. I really hope this book gets Hamilton more work--to breathe such vivid life into a handful of less commonly heard accents spoken by the crew (including Afrikaans & Portuguese) was refreshingly impressive.

Which character – as performed by Malcolm Hamilton – was your favorite?

Any Afrikaans-to-English accent he did was brilliant. As I mentioned, EVERY character is richly drawn and spoken for here.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I could NOT stop thinking about this book (and still haven't stopped). The initial journal-entry template, later escalating with time-stamps as the tempo rapidly picks up only added to the visceral telling of this hellacious event.

Any additional comments?

This is one of only two books I've listened to where I'm glad I LISTENED to, instead of READING. As a result, I was treated to an award-worthy performance by someone I've never heard narrate before (Malcolm Hamilton), a talent perfectly cast for narrating this epic story. Hats off to Matt Lewis AND Malcolm Hamilton!

Spellbinding

This is an amazing story. The narrator is great. I was engrossed with it. The story also sheds insights into the fishing industry, how food arrives on our plates, and the sacrifices made getting it there.

Boring

Very boring, too much needless details, there are hundreds if not thousands of sea survival stories just like it.
