Publisher's summary

Leaf Storm is the first book García Márquez wrote. Already we see the colorful historical background that forms the basis for his later work. It covers the history of Macondo from 1903 to 1928, ending the year the author was born.

A man dies, and three people reflect on the story of Macondo’s boom and decline as shown in the family fortunes over three generations. As they attend the wake, the members of the family recall the tragedy that involves them all. Grim, ironic, powerful, Leaf Storm creates a mysterious and ominous atmosphere that lingers on in the listener’s mind.

Editorial Review

In Leaf Storm, listeners will be able to hear the basis that founded the rest of Gabriel García Márquez's literary career. Here, we can hear the first hints of magical realism, with common themes that García Márquez goes on to explore in One Hundred Years of Solitude to techniques like the breakdown of time and multiple perspectives in his family of narrators.
With daily life affected by their association with a widely-hated foreign doctor, the main characters of Leaf Storm must contend with the scorn of the town for giving the deceased French doctor a funeral where the others would leave him to rot. The memorable characters that form his family of narrators explore a range of themes. While the young grandson must struggle with the concept of death itself, the daughter is more concerned with family fortunes and the family's reputation among their peers, damaged since the doctor's arrival in town. Meanwhile, the father, a colonel, reflects on the promise he made to the now-dead doctor to bury him properly.
This novella is our first introduction to the fictional town of Macondo, a setting that García Márquez used again in many of his following works. While the main story focuses on the wake and funeral, there is still the pervading exploration of everyday life present in many of the Colombian author's works.
Kenny Ramos, Jack de Golia, and Marisol Ramirez breathe life into the perspectives of father, daughter, and grandson. The development of characters feels unique and real to listeners, with each given a distinct personality to match their central theme. Every second of this audiobook builds on the world and characters until they bloom into full realism. — Audible Latino Editor
