Learning to See = Seeing to Learn: Vision, Learning & Behavior in Children is a book for parents, educators, and healthcare professionals about how undiagnosed visual processing issues can impact children in school.
For students, it's more than just whether they can see the board. Children with learning challenges often are diagnosed with ADD and ADHD when it is the learning difficulties that trigger their behaviors. Training the "eye-teaming" problem will allow these otherwise bright and engaged students to read well and have a successful school experience.
Most parents and educators know many of these children who end up with special plans to accommodate their reading problems (known as IEPs), but they are not aware that for many students, this problem can be solved. It will literally change the future of that child with great opportunities in school, careers, and self-esteem.
Written principally by Dr. Patrick Quaid, the book explores his clinical and research insights into diagnosing and treating the condition. With him, it is even more personal - he was one of those kids. The book also includes chapters contributed by teachers, academics, and practitioners. While there are some later chapters that are a resource for practitioners or others with a deeper interest, the majority of the book is written to be accessible to the general public.
Learning to See = Seeing to Learn is a book that will give millions of parents hope for their struggling children. It also will equip teachers and other health professionals with another set of tools to help children reach their full potential. This book is an excellent source of information.
I learned a lot from this Dr.! I learned about how the brain will compensate for a handicapp. I learned about how some childen who see 20/20 may exert far more energy into seeing 20/20; the energy the child has to expend to see 20/20, if there is a tracking issue... can lead to misdiagnosis of things like ADHD, ODD...
I am grateful I bought his book.
