About this listen

Edgar Award winner Joe R. Lansdale writes outrageous fiction that rockets along with violent spikes of action and intense humor. Gulf War vet Cason Statler has moved back to his East Texas hometown after losing his job as a reporter in Houston (sleeping with both the boss' wife and 30-year-old stepdaughter has a way of ruining career prospects). But when his new gig has him investigating a local girl's disappearance, Cason opens a can of worms that might get him killed.©2008 Joe R. This is a well written little story - but for all his acting talent they picked the wrong narrator for a rough, smart mouth Texan and a parade of back woods psychos. Tom Butler's narration - while technically well executed - sounds like a dead ringer for Ryan Reynolds with his Canadian Accent and smart mouth dialogue..

Wrong Narrator for this project.

Another fine hard core small town mystery. I love the way Mr. Lansdale takes his time developing the characters and ramping up the suspense. As usual, I savored every word. Also I just love the colorful comparative phrases he comes up with. They are always a hit when ever I have the occasion to to use one. Thank you Joe!

I went on a Joe Lansdale tear, listening to 9 in a row. In retrospect I wouldn't do that again as the same author may wear on you unless he/she is one of your favorites. E.g., I could listen to Ken Follett and James Lee Burke books one after another, but Lansdale isn't as good - not bad, but certainly not one of my all time favorites.

Overall, the story was pretty good. For the most part I looked forward to getting back to it and finishing it. The characters were good and held my interest.

While this book is the second about "Camp Rapture", a town / settlement in East Texas, there is no need to listen to them in order. They are separated by a couple / few generations and independent.

The narrator was ok, but more akin to an annoying B-List bad actor.

Overall, I would recommend the book as it was entertaining and held my attention!

Good Story with So-So narration

Nothing deep here, but certainly entertaining. I highly recommend it if that's what you're looking for.

Brutal Entertainment

But I still enjoyed this novel, even with the graphic violence, etc. Readers should be ware this novel isn’t a cozy mystery. And they should check out those content warnings before reading, if they are troubled by certain content. The narrator was pretty great, imo.

Not his best,
