About this listen

The singer, guitarist, and songwriter, best known for his work with Wilco, opens up about his past, his songs, the music, and the people that have inspired him.

Few bands have inspired as much devotion as the Chicago rock band Wilco, and it's thanks, in large part, to the band's singer, songwriter, and guiding light: Jeff Tweedy. But while his songs and music have been endlessly discussed and analyzed, Jeff has rarely talked so directly about himself, his life, and his artistic process.

Until now. In his long-awaited memoir, Jeff will tell stories about his childhood in Belleville, Illinois; the St. Louis record store, rock clubs, and live-music circuit that sparked his songwriting and performing career; and the Chicago scene that brought it all together. He'll also talk in-depth about his collaborators in Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, and more, and write lovingly about his parents; wife, Susie; and sons, Spencer and Sam. Honest, funny, and disarming, Tweedy's memoir will bring listeners inside both his life and his musical process, illuminating his singular genius and sharing his story, voice, and perspective for the first time.

Includes a bonus with a comic strip and song lyrics.

Critic reviews

“Engaging… Sometimes the most revolutionary thing about music comes down to its ability to transform an individual.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“Wildly entertaining… Breathtaking…Unforgettable…Tweedy's music has never shied away from darkness, but he's also never been afraid to celebrate joy. The same is true with this remarkable memoir - it's a wonderful book, alternately sorrowful and triumphant, and it's a gift not just to his fans, but to anyone who cares about American rock music.” (NPR.org)

"The book’s unsparing detail - on everything from his upbringing in drab Belleville, Illinois, to the contentious band dynamics of Wilco and alt-country gods Uncle Tupelo - make this a uniquely raw rock autobiography.” (Rolling Stone)

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book. Mr. Tweedy's writing and insights are riveting. It's amazing that he was even able to make music with all that life threw at him. Jeff is the kind of person that makes the world a better place, and is unapologetic about it. I wish I knew more people like him. It takes real courage to do experience life on that level and bounce back again and again. I have only seen Wilco once, but I can't wait to see them again now that I have a slightly better understanding of the music, what inspired it, and how it was made.

Excellent book and life lessons!

I've always enjoyed Jeff Tweedy's wit, sense of humor, and humility. His memoir is full of all three. First hand accounts of Uncle Tupelo's demise and the falling out with Jay Bennett are brief, but Jeff's writing tells all that needs to be said.
My favorite part of the book was just listening to Jeff recap his musical exploration and discoveries as a youth. I think every serious music fan can relate to that journey regardless of genre. A love of music is a powerful connector in this world and by Jeff sharing his with you, you'll walk away with a great appreciation and bond with one of my generation's greatest songwriters and musicians.

A must read for any Wilco fan...

I don’t know that I have ever been so affected by an audiobook. Yes, it helps that I am a Wilco fan, but with this book, Jeff Tweedy has explored and expressed his artful approach to both life and language while, ironically, delivering as direct and honest a reflection as I could have hoped for. Again, to be fair, some of this reaction on my part was aided by Tweedy narrating the audiobook himself, and I would highly recommend that format. This memoir seemed to seek neither glamor nor drama, and as a result, it delivered authentic laughs and tears. (No exaggeration — I actually paused in chapter 12 and went back later because I was tearing up a bit on the way to work.) In short, I recommend this book for anyone interested in Tweedy, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, etc., and also — and especially — for anyone seeking to understand the writing and recording process, at least for one artist. I wish I had been able to read this book when I was younger, playing in a band and recording on my laptop. Thank you, Jeff Tweedy, for an exceptional book I will return to in the future.

Far beyond any expectations for a memoir

Wilco's history

This is probably my new favorite memoir.

Written and narrated by Jeff (and guests), this retelling of his life feels very first-hand, comparable to Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential" in that way. The casual yet tactful delivery really helps put you in Tweedy's head, and that's the idea; it's not an authoritative history of Wilco so much as a quick ridealong through Jeff's life and lessons through his eyes. The narrator is very in touch with what he feels and is exceptionally adept at communicating it. Leave with contextualized songs and a good feeling inside.

Almost Feels Like Hanging Out With Him

Thank you, Jeff. For one of the best deep dives into creativity, adulting, parenting, family, coping, living, grace, honesty, and music that I've ever read. Brought me to tears and inspired me.

Life-changing book for me!

just so honest, right-on and endearing. I wept twice (father & sons stories and stuff with Susie). I loved it.

BEST ROCK MEMOIR I'VE READ since Bob Mould's

Loved this book. Kept going back to re-read (listen) chapters. Couldn’t get enough of Tweedy’s wit and insights. His humor, honesty and emotion, holds you close throughout the book. Truly appreciated hearing his addiction journey—- and perspectives of his wife through that. I didn’t know that much about Wilco—bought the book after reading a review in some magazine. By far the best book I’ve read all year. And if you like Audible— he is really easy to listen to too.
Highly recommend.

loved this book!
