About this listen

The saga of the Rêveur continues in this second novel in the Silver Ships series.

The surviving Méridiens have returned to Confederation space, aided by their recently discovered cousins, the New Terrans. They expect a celebration after their 71-year absence. Instead, they're shocked to find the silver ships have destroyed half the Confederation.

The Méridiens are fleeing in advance of the horde of alien ships. But Alex Racine and his crew didn't come this far to run away from humanity's enemy. They intend to hunt the silver ships. But, to succeed, they need help. Renée de Guirnon, the leader of the Rêveur's Méridiens, reveals a sordid secret of Méridien society: Citizens who defy their House, for any reason, are stripped of their rights, declared "Independents", and imprisoned on the planet Libre. But the Independents aren't everyone's pariahs, especially if you're Alex Racine and you're looking for allies against the silver ships. An entire colony of independent, free-thinking radicals offers just the sort of people Alex wants on his side, so an alliance is struck. Soon the enemy ships will swarm off the planet Bellamonde, and the race begins for Alex and the Librans. The planet must be evacuated and the military force readied before the silver ships attack. Alex knows a battle is coming, but will they have enough time to prepare?

The Meridiens and New Terrans aboard the ship Reveur have arrived at the planet Libre. Alex Racine is now the Admiral in charge instead of the Captain of Reveur. Renee de Guirnon is the leader of the Meridien’s aboard Reveur. She has defied the de Guirnon House and declared themselves the House of Alexander. They are joining forces with the Independents on the planet Libre. Those people who defied their House were exiled to Libre. Soon they will be in battle with the Silver Ships.

The book is well written. The characters are well developed and interesting. I am enjoying the ship’s AI, Julian, along with the newly added AI’s to the story. There is lots of action along with the creation of a new culture and world building. I am looking forward to book three of the series.

The book is ten and a half hours long. Grover Gardner does an excellent job narrating the book. Gardner is an actor and award-winning audiobook narrator.

A planet of free Meridiens

Not a bad book, not a great book....somewhat predictable storyline. 4 out of 5, would not kick it out of bed for eating crackers, but not gonna put a ring on its finger.

Meh...

If you could sum up Libre in three words, what would they be?

Good Sci-fi adventure

What did you like best about this story?

This episode carries us to the next staging post for the Meridien survivors as they try to survive the invasion of the silver ships and our hero, Alex Racine, leads them with skill, judgement, commitment and, of course, good luck in the nick of time

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

Grover Gardner is one of the grand masters of narration which a superb range of characters and a unique talent for accenting his voice to convey thoughts versus spoken words. He also deftly handles the artificial intelligences extremely well and avoids "robotizing" them

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When they had to leave so many on the plant

House Alexander saves the day

Alex has become an admiral, leading a ship that is fighting back against mysterious invaders. He is brilliant and courageous, the stakes are high and the time is short. A fun read.

Swashbuckling fun in space

I found the books very interesting because of the intricate character relationships and focusing on the interaction between each one of the characters in the store. most interesting is the interaction between the ships AI or s a i d.

Hard to summarize

Holds your attention, nice steady cadence. More battles would be a nice add on though.

Engrossing

What made the experience of listening to Libre the most enjoyable?

It's nice to have a good story where the hero(s) aren't constantly looking for trouble. Sometime though, just a little too sappie. It's good that people are getting along better than real life but, a bit unbelievable. Overall a good listen so far.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Sad leaving so few folks on Libre

Not sure.....

You really should have read part one before this book. If you have read part 1 then you will enjoy part 2. The story is heating up. Lots of action and tense moments. Still no profanity, which I appreciate. All around a good book.

it's getting interesting!
