About this listen

From Joshua Dalzelle, author of the best-selling Omega Force series, comes an all new vision of humanity's future.

In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy? Would humanity fold and surrender, or would they return to their evolutionary roots and meet force with force?

One ship - and one captain - will soon be faced with this very choice.

I don't think of myself as a military procedural book reader. I love space epics, fantasy and scifi. This book is pretty good. It has characters that are interesting and are experienced (older). The ship is crewed by misfits and have some amount of growth through the story. I liked how it felt, I dunno.. "real", is that possible in a space ship/alien drama, does it sound stupid? You see, they didn't have many plot "conveniences", theres no teleporters or anything to get them from point A to B quickly to move from one action sequence to another (with the exception of an FTL). Even in their communications theres signifiant delays. I've heard it said that war is "interminable boredom punctuated by moments of terror" and this book is very much like that (but not boring :) ). Because distance between objects in space are really far apart strategy becomes more important, they will fire a missile and wait for hours before they know if its actually successful. So they need to be clever in more deliberate ways. The action sequences are really short and tense with long planning sessions, plenty of time for character development.

I grew up with shows like BSG and Star Blazers. Shows with old outdates spaceships and damaged crews having to rise to the occasion. This book touches a bit on those plot lines. It was fun to listen too, Ill listen to the others, when they come out.

When I started listening I wasn't sure I would like this style of sci-fi but by the end I was invested. Something about the style of writing kept me from feeling for the characters until the end. Also while the narrator's character voices were superb, I didn't enjoy the voice he used for narration. I don't know why but he used a style of inflection that didn't convey emotion for me. However again by the end I was enjoying his narration much more. So who knows if you will like it but in the end I did and am looking forward to listening to the next book.

Ended up liking it

I'm a big Syfy fan and I obsess over reviews before committing to a new book. But the cover image appealed to me too. The book was on my radar.

To start with the book develops the characters at an even and steady pace. Almost too patient, so I thought. But, then something happens, something sudden and out of nowhere. The book turns on a dime and suddenly the reader/listener is thrown into a non stop Syfy action suspense thriller that cannot be put down. Awesome!!!

Side note: obvious parallels in this to Star Trek TNG and the original series, The author even makes a nod the legendary show in the epilogue .

Listen to this book, you will be glad you took the chance.

Well worth it

I was in edge of my seat the whole time. Great story line. Before I knew it, I had been driving for almost 8hrs.

Awesome book

Good, simplistic, WWII navy-in-space complete with Pearl Harbor. The entire plot would fit nicely into a film directed by Michael Bay. 2D characters abound, the big guns fire, captains yell "full ahead"...it's like Star Trek would have been if Gene had been a conservative.

And, for all that, it moves along nicely and is fun. It sounds a lot like golden-age SF, which I like. Dumb, but fun.

Good pulp
