Dated without standing out

Tropes can be both good and bad but unfortunately this story does not twist the tropes in a way that is neither clever nor original. A fairytale princess seeks to rescue her young lover by herself: clever. The overbearing mother queen that refuses her daughter’s autonomy: not so much.

The Princess has a goal and challenge set in front of her but the introduction dwells more so on her fear of heights rather than why she’s even doing it. The homophobic mother comes across as one dimensional rather than misunderstood or just evil. Even their societal foundations come across as being far too binary (day & night, order & chaos, man & woman) or entirely too simple.

The performance was unfortunately lacking. The reader comes across as too breathy, too lightly spoken which can help develop a Princess-like character but becomes repetitive bordering on annoying when used with a “tomboyish” girl…and all the other characters in the story. There is no tonal difference between the lovers or the queen, merely a breathy recreation of the written word.

Overall, this story is “okay” with a caveat it’ll take an hour to enjoy…if that’s possible.
