About this listen

LIVES ON THE DOLE: THREE DIVERGENT TALES OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN BRITAIN consists of the following three stories: 1 – LIFE ON THE DOLE by FILIUS THOREAU: Filius Thoreau, arch-benefit fraudster and jaunty raconteur, celebrates the silver anniversary of his induction into the world of the workshy with his candid, but not too candid, autobiography in which he celebrates the unique and sinuous path he has steered through the minefield of work-obsessed modern Britain. From the dark days of the Poll Tax through the laissez-faire nineties to the ghastly government work schemes of the new millennium, Filius has marched onwards to the sound of his own personal drummer and constructed a uniquely apologist philosophy along the way. 2 – NORTHERN DOLE by JACK HESSELL: Northern Dole is the candid account of an unemployed man in his sixtieth year reflecting on his life to date and the situation in which he unexpectedly finds himself. Jack Hessell is not an accomplished writer, as he would be the first to admit, but by laying down of his thoughts and reflections during the most trying period of his life he hopes to permit others to analyse, understand, and perhaps learn from his mistakes; or to reassure themselves that such tribulations have not happened and could not happen to them. This revealing memoir is a wistful, rambling but ultimately enlightening and uplifting narrative which will be chiefly of interest to those of us who seek to attain more insight into the experiences of those members of our society who go largely unheard. 3 – ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVOR DENNIDGE – A SHORT STORY by JACK HESSELL: Ivor Dennidge had chosen his way of life and planned to stick to it. He had found a perfect work/benefits balance which allowed him to live as he saw fit and avoid the slavery of full-time work. He had everything he needed to enjoy life and an abundance of what he valued most; spare time. This is the story of a day which began in much the same way as the previous 2,878 days of Ivor Dennidge’s post-rat-race existence. European World Literature Feel-Good
