Lola Steele wakes with the dawn, entombed in a small car, in another woman's clothes. As the fog abates - physically and metaphorically - the fear and pain return. Lola is on the run, accused of murdering the men she loved and orchestrating an organized crime ring within the music industry.

I'm not going to mess around: the plot is preposterous, the main character is bizarrely inconsistent, and there are some weird shifts in style and pace. But it's fun escapism, if you can let the implausibility float on by, because of the reading. When the plot goes over the top, the reader's calm, steady voice keeps it grounded. When the heroine makes a(nother) inexplicable flip from Bond-level competent to Victorian-lady useless, or back, the reader's equilibrium makes the change seem almost plausible.

Absurd escapism with a reader who makes it work
