About this listen

"A tour de force...London tracks the history of the English capital from the days of the Celts until the present time.... Breathtaking." - The Orlando Sentinel

Here is Edward Rutherfurd's classic novel of London, a glorious pageant spanning 2,000 years. He brings this vibrant city's long and noble history alive through the ever-shifting fortunes, fates, and intrigues of half-a-dozen families, from the age of Julius Caesar to the 20th century. Generation after generation, these families embody the passion, struggle, wealth, and verve of the greatest city in the world.

My 3rd brilliant novel by author

I fell in love with Serum many years ago. Recently I listened to Edward Rutherfurd’s New York, which was truly wonderful. This novel is a sweeping epic about London.
This book was different from New York because London is an ancient city. But it is still just as fascinating and well written as the other Rutherfurd books I’ve read/listened to.
Andrew Wincott is a talented narrator who brings this book to life.
I am so happy I’ve rediscovered this author after so many years. I plan to listen to Russka next, plus I already have the Ireland books in my library when I’m done with the next novel!

Good book, but with a glaring omission

I enjoyed listening to this book. I gave it four stars though because I think that a historical fiction book happening in London and spanning two millennia cannot be complete without at least a chapter on World War 1.

First 2 chapters...almost gave up

This started very slow and I almost gave up. Then the characters developed and the story started moving quickly. By chapter 4 I waa totally hooked and recommended this book many times. Was actually sad to get to the end....I loved living IN London, if only in a book.

Unexpected delight

This style of novel is such a rare find… a saga of families and human choices interwoven with the consequences of even trivial happenings. I loved every minute of it. Well-written, of course, with immaculate balance of plot, setting and character, verdant language and lovely narration.

Great Historical Novel ! Learn and be entertained

What a bargain - over 49 hours of history with a cast of entertaining characters. While most characters were fictionalized, their lives, conduct, emotions, and motives were consistent with my over 60 years experience. How Mr. Rutherford ties the characters together over the span of almost 2,000 years - he is a craftsman. The story very complex, yet could be followed and always fascinating. I like entertaining learning and the book LONDON, educates in the history of London in a very entertaining way. Narrator Mr. Wincott - excellent.

So glad the author has other books that I can enjoy.

Makes History Come Alive

This is a wonderful history of London. The reader is excellent. He does a wonderful job of performing voices that fit the characters. If you enjoy English history I would highly recommend this book. I’ve enjoyed all the books by this author. He does an excellent job of weaving interesting story lines into the history and creating characters that you really care about.

Great for history and archaeology lovers!

If you are at all interested in London and it's history, you should read this book. Following generations of fictional families through non-fictional events and time periods allows for a very enjoyable review of London and its mixture of people. The only thing I would have liked more was if the author spent a little more time on certain historical events and periods. Some lasted a lot longer than others in the book. The voice was pretty good, but really only had one for women, but that's understandable since it's a man speaking.

Excellent book.

Wonderful work. The historical facts were well researched and I really enjoyed it. For the most part, the reader did a good job. I felt like he was prepared. However he resorted to whispering when he wanted to take on the voice of somebody else in the conversation. It was absolutely annoying except for the times the situation called for being surreptitious.
About halfway through I felt it started to drag. The stories had become rather repetitive. But all in all I would read this author again and recommend him.

Amazing

The characters, the history.. it’s truly genius the way the family stories moved forward through thousands of years and yet they stayed fluid and clear. I learned so much and enjoyed every minute!

My one small critique of the narrator is that he is awful at female voices. They were either childlike or high pitch whispers. Not good.
