About this listen

Jerry White's London in the Nineteenth Century is the richest and most absorbing account of the city's greatest century by its leading expert.

London in the nineteenth century was the greatest city mankind had ever seen. Its growth was stupendous. Its wealth was dazzling. Its horrors shocked the world. This was the London of Blake, Thackeray and Mayhew, of Nash, Faraday and Disraeli. Most of all it was the London of Dickens. As William Blake put it, London was 'a Human awful wonder of God'.

In Jerry White's dazzling history we witness the city's unparalleled metamorphosis over the course of the century through the daily lives of its inhabitants. We see how Londoners worked, played and adapted to the demands of the metropolis during this century of dizzying change. The result is a panorama teeming with life.

Incomplete title

The title of this book is somewhat misleading. It should be called "The Poor of London in the 19th Century," or using the endless-title style of an earlier age: "The Poor of London in the 19th Century: their push for unionization and socialism, of which the author heartily approves, with some other details included."

Whether that makes the book more or less desirable is, of course, a matter of taste. But that's what this book is.

Very technical

I was hoping to hear about how people lived, but this book is more technical

Excellent in all aspects.

The writing is crisp and the details so good you're almost there in the flesh.

Interesting but incoherent

"London in the NIneteenth Century" is probably not a good topic for a single book. This book is extremely disorganized and offers a deluge of trivia rather than a coherent historical narrative.

SO DETAILED..SO VERY VERY DETAILED.

Maybe just me, but how I wish one of these books on 19th century London was not bogged down with lists. Lists of roads, train stations, building works. A book that took me on a mental walk through the city, showed me the sites, enhanced the smell & noise of the city, above all focused on the people as though I was meeting them, not batter me around the head with so much data I finds myself weary waiting for the next portion that actually perks up my ears,

Boring

Some parts interesting, but all those statistics and number guesstimates, were over done. I had to tune out.
