About this listen

A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Lonesome Dove, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.

Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

This remastered audio edition is expertly read by actor Lee Horsley, best known for his starring role in the television series Matt Houston.

The story is incredible, the characters are unforgettable, and yet the narration is so awful (particularly the voice given to Gus McCrae) that I abandoned the audiobook 5-10 chapters in and finished the rest via paperback.

Spectacular book/terrible narration

It’s a long take, to be sure, but Lee Horsley keep it a clear one. His talent is extraordinary. If you have wanted to experience this award winning novel but were intimidated by the page count, I highly recommend this audio book.

Outstanding narration!

All is great tho the narrator is horrible. Monotone or screaming. He kinda killed a perfect story.

GREAT BOOK, GREAT READ, GREAT STORY....

Great book. Great reading. I haven't listened to too many audiobooks twice. Say you want a classic Western that'll make laugh, cry smile and fret? Here ya go.

You just found some satisfying fiction.

I don’t know why this was, but the volume was super low. I had to jack up my car audio just to hear. But every other source of audio would then blare super loud. A serious annoyance.

Poor volume

This may be the best book I’ve ever read. The length you spend with the characters truly makes every moment hit so hard. Mount Rushmore of all time books

Incredible story

The narrator used to start the book pronouncing Xavier like Javier, and then switches halfway. I'm bummed they edited it, because it's really jarring and way more noticeable.

Audible messin with the books smh

an already perfect novel, made, miraculously, even better by Horsley`s performance and the stellar voice acting he provides for each of the characters.

Ideal audionook experience

We all know and love this epic. I just could not settle into Lee Horsley hollering as loud as he did when reading Gus's parts. The book clearly states that Gus was loud. I get it. It just kinda ruined it for me.

just a little too overdone

Excellent book. It was better than expected.
I quickly got used to the louder Gus voice.

Loved Lonesome Dove.
