About this listen

Michael Thomas Ford Mike Monaghan is the bartender at the Engine Room, a meeting place for the small but thriving community of gay men in Cold Falls, New York. As Mike pours beer, wipes glasses and hears everything, he's also witness to the men who come here looking for what they need--sex, direction, friendship, spiritual fulfillment, and love. People like: Stephen Darby--As an accountant, he knows many secrets. But Stephen has his own secret, one he's never been able to share with anyone close to him. Being the perfect son costs him dearly, and now it may take from him the one man he longs for.

Pete Thayer--Playing it straight, Pete takes out his frustrations on transmissions and engines during the day, then spends his nights trying to quench his needs through anonymous sex. But once the thrill of the forbidden begins to fade, what will he be left with? John and Russell--The golden couple in town has the ideal relationship everyone wants. But behind the scenes, their storybook marriage is on the verge of facing some explosive trials that will shake both men completely.

Father Thomas Dunn--More and more the gentle priest is feeling a need to express the secret desires that conflict with his devotion to the church, sending his faith into a tailspin and making him question what he really wants from life. Simon Bird--He's a fixture in town, an old queen everyone finds amusing and entertaining. Still mourning the loss of his longtime lover, Simon yearns to find love and a place in a culture that worships youth and beauty.

As Mike hands these men their drinks, he marvels at their determination, strength and foolishness. But most of all, he begins to question his own dissatisfaction, pondering what's missing from his own life, and what risks he may have to take to find fulfillment. Looking For It is an extraordinarily human tale of community, friendship, and the search for happiness. With unflinching honesty, keen insight, and his trademark humor, Michael Thomas Ford weaves together the unforgettable stories of these seven men, chronicling their dreams, hurts, heartbreaks, joys, and hopes, while taking readers on an emotional journey to find what it is we're all looking for.

From the great performance to the strong storyline... It was a great book to listen too....

Very smooth and gripping story!

This book has some enjoyable twists and turns. I could have done without the graphic sex, his sex scenes seem to be getting more spicy in his writings.

Always enjoy Ford's work

I found Looking For It to be a compelling story, not perfect, but heart touching. This story takes place in the time when AIDs was recognized as a deadly disease but not a full understanding of prevention and well before pharmaceutical treatments were developed. AIDs isn’t the main topic but gives a relative point in history for the story setting. The main focus is on 5 men and their personal experiences affecting both behavior and ability to grow emotionally.
I think it’s a better than good story. Excellent narration too.

A Thoughtful Glimpse Into Other Lives

An enjoyable read with dynamic characters. I recommend skipping any chapters with the Pete character in them. they are hyper-violent and quite full of hate speech. the rest of the story and characters would have easily earned five stars from me. each chapter focuses on a different character. I enjoyed watching the different relationships, in particular the budding new ones. best of luck Simon!

Beware the Pete chapters

A good entertaining listen; interesting characters and good escapism. It's not a classic but if you just want to get into the lives of a few new people and follow them for a while, it's worthwhile.

Good entertainment

Great story with hot scenes. Worth a listen if you're tired of bland erotica. I think it might have ended a little too quickly though.

This is the first book I've listened to by this author. The story is a series of stories of different characters in various stages in their lives. The author does a great job of eventually entwining the story lines and his writing is great. I enjoyed three of the five storylines, but two were very dark and I really didn't like them. I ended up fast forwarding through whenever Stephen and Pete's stories started, but that was a personal preference, some people may not mind. Pete was a violent closet case and Stephen was a closeted submissive with self destructive tendencies. Overall it was OK, but I don't know if I'll continue with this author.

Great narration but just OK story

Another great book by Michael Thomas Ford. I wonder, coincidence that the protagonist Mike, meets his true love, Father Thomas in this book? Wouldn't that be fun?

I could listen to his books all day
