Publisher's summary

On a sultry summer afternoon, paramedic Zoe Chambers responds to a call and finds a farmer's body hanging from the rafters of his hay barn. What first appears to be a suicide quickly becomes something sinister when Zoe links the victim to a pair of deaths 45 years earlier. Her attempts to wheedle information from her mother and stepfather hit a brick wall of deception, one that brings into question everything Zoe knows about her late father, who died in a car crash when she was eight. Or did he?

Police Chief Pete Adams fears Zoe's inquiries are setting her up for deeper heartbreak and putting her in danger. As Zoe and Pete inch closer to the truth, they discover that a missing gun links the crimes which span more than four decades. But the killer isn't done. Two more Vance Township residents fall victim to the same gun, and when tragedy strikes too close to home, Zoe realizes her family is in the crosshairs.

Great summer read!

amateur-sleuth, cozy-mystery, suspense, mystery, law-enforcement, family-dynamics, friendship

A fast paced mystery full of red herrings and other distractions that kept me reading it all day! Well drawn characters who interact in both predictable and totally different ways. Loved it!
Narrator Romy Nordlinger uses drama when needed and a matter of fact approach when appropriate.

Very good story

Entertaining story line. It kept my interest. Zoe does typical stupid actions in last chapter, leading to typical, predictable ending.

One very annoying issue - when people die by hanging they are hanged, not hung. Stockings are hung by fireplace, people are hanged.

Poor production good story

Narrator forgets to change voices a lot of times and there is no pause between the end of one scene when it switches to another. Very annoying but you can still get through it. I had a lot of those "Wait, who's speaking now," moments. I blame the producer/director not the author.

Pretty good story

This is the second book by Annette Dashofy, in which Zoe Chambers, a paramedic in rural Pennsylvania works with Pete Adams, the chief of police, to solve crimes. They discover, upon being summoned to a barn where an old farmer has committed suicide, that there is a much older and more involved unsolved mystery that involves Zoe’s family. She and her mother have a conflicted relationship, and her mother and step father happen to be having a rare visit with her at this time, so this opens the way for her to get necessary information that will eventually help lead to answers.

This series is pretty good, not great. The narration starts badly but greatly improves as the book progresses. I liked the first book as well as this one, and recommend both as a good listen.
