Publisher's summary

Fresh out of college, Evan has everything going for him: a good job, a beautiful fiancée, and the prospect of making partner at his firm. Then one night, with one bad decision, his dream life turns into a nightmare of cover-ups and lies.

It begins as one last drunken celebration with his old friend Peter but ends with a deadly confrontation so heinous the two make a pact to never tell anyone about it - not even the police. The truth has a way of getting out, however, and the truth about Peter is far more dangerous than Evan could have ever imagined.

Dangling ending

Frustrated, he stopped writing before the end. it felt like it was incomplete , missing a couple chapters.

Quick and shocking

A quick little read with some shocking twists some predictable others not so much. If you like Rector’s other work you’ll like this one too.

Gasping

Would you try another book from John Rector and/or Todd Haberkorn?

Not sure about the author as I couldn't finish the book. What I did hear sounded like it might have held my interest had it not been for that one major distraction...

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I didn't get that far.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator destroyed any possibility of finishing this book or any others he has narrated. He gasped between almost every sentence. I know the man has to breathe but can't he be more subtle? The others I have listened to never seem to have a problem with breathing quietly. When I listen to a book, I like to immerse myself in the story. Every gasped yanked me back out before I could get comfortable. I noticed I had purchased two with him as narrator, I took a listen to the other in hopes it was just some weird technique he tried for this story, it wasn't.

Did Lost Things inspire you to do anything?

Yes. Buy a book with a different narrator.

Great Set Up, Ambiguous Ending

This was my first book by this author. A friendship is tested when a violent act is covered up by two friends and one man learns that he didn't really know his friend at all. It was a good suspense novella, with gradual tension building. The bad part is there is no ending. I listened to this via audio book and narration was good, though a bit rote. Still should've had an ending.

Creepy

So creepy got a short read. Truly enjoyed it. It makes you rethink friendship and what you're willing to sacrifice.

Interesting story

Would have been more satisfied with a true ending. Very ominous end of story. I am learning that this author does not build his characters in depth. They are just part of the storyline.

Great narration. Great production

Twisted and disturbing...

I did enjoy this book. It's one that you end up wishing was a full length book, instead of just a novella. I always listen to audiobooks as I'm going to sleep, but this one kept me awake!Without giving anything away, if you enjoy disturbing suspense, definitely give this a go!

Short but engaging

What did you love best about Lost Things?

The feel of the story is intimate in an evil sort of way. You suspect that Peter is demented but you don't want it to be so. Peter's behavior, that could have been stopped, spirals past the point of return. Engaging read that went by so quickly.

Falls apart at the end

Great start, and then it felt like Rector losi interest in his own story and abruptly ended it. A disappointment from an author I usually enjoy.

Ending Ruins Story

What would have made Lost Things better?

I really loved this book right up until the end. I started listening to it around 2:00 a.m. and was up until nearly 4:00 a.m. when I finally forced myself to go to bed. I couldn't wait to get back to it after work today, and the ending was so dissatisfying that if it had been a physical book, I'd have thrown it across the room. If it had said "to be continued" I'd have been upset, but I'd have been satisfied. However, there's nothing on Rector's website to indicate there will be a sequel. I got this book because it was on an Audible Reviewer's Recommended list. If I can figure out who the reviewer was, I won't be picking up any of their recommendations in the future.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Probably a Lee Child's novel.

What three words best describe Todd Haberkorn’s voice?

I have a hearing disability, and Haberkorn often speaks too softly for me to understand what he's saying. I have to keep rewinding and turning up the volume to pick up what I'd missed.

What character would you cut from Lost Things?

The homeless guy the protagonist keeps seeing who apparently isn't there.

Any additional comments?

I don't mind a cliffhanger ending, but this was just ridiculous.
