About this listen

A USCG pilot who refuses to settle down meets his match when a blast from his past blows into Sitka as a nurse for the medevac team in this second chances, reunion love story.

Robb Horner lives fast and free as a pilot for the US Coast Guards, Air Station, Sitka, Alaska. He’ll do anything for his air crew buddies, but settling down is not one of them. Everyone in Sitka knows that Robb is a fun, sexy, one-night-only kind of guy. The closest he came to falling in love was when he was a teenager, but he’s buried those memories deep because they hurt too much.

Courtney Marks is searching for peace. Still recovering from the trauma of being a nurse during the pandemic, she takes a temporary job for the USCG Clinic in Sitka to heal herself and find a way forward. It’s time to face the great love of her life to understand why he left town all those years ago. Was it her fault?

Will two people who gave up on love find answers and a second chance on a medical helicopter in Sitka, Alaska?

A complete and satisfying love story dedicated to First Responders.

A heartfelt story

Robb Horner was raised in an abusive home, and couldn’t wait to leave home once he was old enough. Courtney Marks knew Robb in their hometown in Georgia, but was younger, and worshipped him from afar. Her brother used to race against him, and Robb often won. Nevertheless, after one particularly grueling race, Robb failed miserably, and Courtney was there to help him out. They spent part of an evening together, but Robb left shortly afterwards, without returning for 15 years. Meanwhile, Courtney has been a nurse helping out with the COVID pandemic, and has seen numerous people die. She’s been traumatized by the experience and heads to Sitka, Alaska to find Robb Horner and to heal from her trauma. Robb is mortified when he finally sees Courtney again, knowing how he disappeared 15 years earlier on her. He’s embarrassed. She takes it as rejection.

There’s much more to this story, and there is a surprising and delightful ending in store for listeners. The part that delighted this listener was the way the author treated the trauma experienced by each of these protagonists with so much sensitivity and heart. Have a few tissues handy, as you may need them. She delves into some tough situations and she examines them with empathy and care.

The narrators do a nice job with this story. There was a slight disconnect in that the female narrator gives the characters a much thicker southern accent than the male narrator does. If listeners can overlook this disparity, the rest of it is wonderful. The production quality of the recording is good and there aren’t any unexpected noises evident in the recording.

This author writes wonderful stories! This is part 3 of a series of stand-alone novels that can be read in or out of order; however, several of the characters reappear from earlier stories, so it adds to readers or listeners enjoyment to read or listen to them in order.
