Publisher's summary

You have been endowed a gift, Lucas. You have been entrusted with a sickle and a staff, whose use and inherent powers you have only seen glimpses of in your short life. These powers will steadily increase, condense, sharpen, and grow. They will progressively submit to the dominion of your command. As with all tools, instruments, weapons, and power, these have the potential to be misused or not, to be properly handled, or not. By definition forceful instruments are morally neutral, and obediently perform at the behest of their master, whatever be his will, disposition or purpose; whether noble or evil inclinations, they serve dutifully....

Great narration and an interesting book

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

So, this book was enjoyable, but kind of odd. The narrator likened this to a rock opera when I picked this one up and that is not a bad description, I think. I like the musical influences throughout the story and I like the period setting of mid-twentieth century UK, but the dialog didn't always... feel right... to me. I did really like the relationship between Lucas and Raven, it kind of made him more relatable for me somehow... Anyway, hands down, the narrator made this experience for me. I will happily give most books a try that David Bosco narrates.

Pink Floyd fans will get it

Interesting concept, but I found myself getting lost and asking "what did I miss?"

The first part of the story was really good. After chapter 7, I kept going back to review chapters I had finished and still never really grasped the storyline again. When it was over, I thought "meh."

The best part of the audiobook...the narrator! David Bosco is spot on with his British accent and does an excellent job of switching between characters. I have found a new favorite to look forward to hearing.

It will keep you entertained & pondering...

Lucas Black (A Novel) by Luis Herrera and narrated by David Bosco might be one of the most interesting creations I’ve ever listened to. The twists and turns...well I promise that you will not know where this book will take you. I recommend it for those who enjoy books with a music and fantasy theme.

What’s it about: It’s a fantasy that will have you pondering quite a few things. David (the narrator) said it’s like a rock opera, which I agree (think rock opera with fantasy elements). The book contains multiple stories of various characters, who are all tied to Lucas Black. I’m not going to go into the different stories as I will give spoilers away or possibly influence your thinking of what takes place- it’s best you listen for yourself and decide. Some of other elements you will encounter are: God/goddess, incubi, religion (not preachy), the mystical black manor, the destruction of mankind (how it comes about and the after-effects), archangels, and some humor. This is a small list of the overall story. If you listen/know about Pink Floyd, Clapton, the Stones, or Led Zeppelin, you will probably have a better appreciation of the book, but it’s not a must. You can always google The Dark Side of the Moon album and read on the idea behind it (hint hint).

The narrator, David Bosco, did a brilliant job! He has a nice variety of characters and the choice of voices were well done.

Overall, I recommend. It’s an offbeat listen that will keep you entertained and thinking. This would be a good choice for a book club discussion as views will vary depending on your interpretation. This will be a repeat listen for me.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: death, some swearing (not excessive), religion (Christian, Jewish), mention of Trump, lynching of politicians (not in detail), and 9/11 mentioned.
