Publisher's summary

From Blake Pierce, best-selling author of Once Gone (a number-one best seller with over 600 five-star reviews), comes a heart-pounding new mystery series.

A bundle of books: Book one (Before He Kills) and book two (Before He Sees) in Blake Pierce’s Mackenzie White mystery series! This bundle offers books one and two in one convenient file.

In Before He Kills, in the cornfields of Nebraska, a woman is found murdered, strung up on a pole, the victim of a deranged killer. It doesn’t take long for the police to realize a serial killer is on the loose - and that his spree has just begun. Detective Mackenzie White, young, tough, smarter than the aging, chauvinistic men on her local force, finds herself called in grudgingly to help solve it. As much as the other officers hate to admit it, they need her young, brilliant mind, which has already helped crack cold cases that had left them stumped. Yet even for Mackenzie this new case proves an impossible riddle, something the likes of which she - and the local force - have never seen.

In Before He Sees, FBI agent-in-training Mackenzie White struggles to make her mark in the FBI Academy in Quantico, trying to prove herself as a woman and as a transplant from Nebraska. Hoping she has what it takes to become an FBI agent and leave her life in the Midwest behind for good, Mackenzie just wants to keep a low profile and impress her superiors. But all that changes when the body of a woman is found in a garbage dump. The murder bears shocking similarities to the Scarecrow Killer - the case that made Mackenzie famous in Nebraska - and in the frantic race against time to stop a new serial killer, the FBI decides to break protocol and give Mackenzie a chance on the case.

Whats with the accent?

Both the stories were good and held my attention but quite frankly, it was really hard to get past the narrator who was supposedly born and bred in Nebraska and had such a heavy English accent and then of course then so did all the other characters. I tried to ignore it, but it really was distracting.

A fair thriller marred by weird narration choice

Fairly predictable plot but OK. Don’t understand why a clearly US based story was narrated by a British narrator who emphasised every word. It detracted from the narrative & the setting.

Not bad but not my genre

Not for readers looking for tight police procedurals or reading under the bed scary Serial Killers. This book wanders around. The lead cop appears to be working toward her Girl Scout detective badge. I got tickled at one point... was Porter a dog or a man? He got shot (or slipped in blood.) I counted the sentences required to answer this query. The writer does well - I loved her phrase, " her hand gloved in blood" PS - Go Huskers!

Good but weird

Great books really enjoyed them. But found it hard to get past the English accent with the Nebraska/American setting.

Good entertainment

I enjoy the Mackenzie White mystery series. Some of her actions are a bit "fantastic" and I don't think she will remain an FBI agent long in the real world, but the entertainment value is good. Books are not to gory, and easy to listen to. Keeps the mind working on the mystery at hand.

Good but a few problems

I enjoyed these 1st two books but the two major problems I had were how she kept getting in trouble with the people she interviewed or took down and the British accent.

Narrator is a very good reader but....

not in the context of Nebraska. Also too much man bashing for me. Better to a be a confident woman rather than mope around with a chip on the shoulder.

English Americans

First the story was a good story. The action was good Iliked that the story was clean and the suspense and excitement were captivating.
Two things I didn't like: The harsh language. I almost quit listening several times but haste quitting on the story. The "preview" didn't give me any indication of the harsh language. It was slow at first worse by the end of the first story and the second story was even worse for several cuss words most particularly the "F" word. I will not be listening to any more in this author's library. I know that authors are trying to make things more true to life, but I don't really care about that. I don't want to spend money and time with a book that uses vulgar language.
Second, though I thought the narrator was exceptionally good as a reader, the British accent made it hard for me to think Nebraska and Virginia. In my mind I pictured English homes, apartments and places rather than American. She was a really good narrator but it confused my mind a little at times.
Overall, I was entertained, I felt sorry for wading through the language and listening.
I wish Audible would come up with a way to rate the books for language and thematic issues. It would help me choose my books better.
