About this listen
When the Night Foxes boldly break into the Fourth Precinct’s Evidence Building, it causes quite the stir. The break-in is daring enough, but their method shreds the magical wards and protections on the building like confetti paper. To say the police are ‘alarmed’ by this is the understatement of the century.
As a Magical Examiner, Henri Davenforth is, of course, immediately called in. Quite to his astonishment, Captain Gregson has him work the case like a detective. Even more astounding, he assigns Henri a partner - The Shinigami Detective.
The woman is famous for killing the most destructive rogue witch of the century, and no one is quite certain where she’s from. Every officer in the precinct is either in awe of her, or a little frightened by her. Henri is just baffled. What is he supposed to do with a partner?
Hopefully, killing one witch makes Jamie Edwards enough of an expert on magic to be helpful, as the thieves aren’t content to just break into one building. They, in fact, seem to have an agenda - as with each theft, they take magical objects. It’s all mounting to a dangerously powerful, magical construct, capable of toppling the wards on any building.
And no one has any idea what the thieves true target is.

Story
There was a time when magic was welcome in the country of Chahir, but that was nearly two centuries ago. Now, all forms of magic are strictly forbidden. Anyone caught using magic, or possessing magical abilities, are immediately imprisoned and executed. For Garth, that policy is a problem. As Garth approaches his 16th birthday, he realizes that he definitely has magical abilities. What's worse, he has no control over them. In order to stay alive, he only has one choice—he must leave his homeland, Chahir, and flee into the neighboring country, Hain.

One ancient mask with earth-bending powers searching for a bearer. One magical retrieval expert who is determined to seal it back in its tomb. At the moment, both are failing at their goals, but Arwen is not about to be bested. So what if she doesn’t know what culture it’s from or where to put it back? She’s smarter than a semi-sentient mask...hopefully. But if the thrice-cursed mask breaks out of her seal one more time, she’s melting it with prejudice, magical backlash be damned.

Story
Every year, the empire administers the rite of passage into adulthood. That rite serves to identify those blessed by Aether to become magi. The new magi are shipped to the academy to learn the arts of magic. The academy is a dangerous place; the tournaments held twice each year can cripple or kill the students, and the clans of the empire will go to great lengths to recruit the students they want. Gregory had one dream: to become a magi like the legends of old. Though he was ridiculed by the residents of the village and his unsupportive father, he never wavered from his dream.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again. His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. Love the story! Fantastic acting by narrators.
I had read this story on Kindle and bought the audible version because I was going on a road trip with family. This was an excellent choice as both narrators brought the characters to life. Excellent pacing.

Great series
Love the world building. My only complaint is that the Female MC has to explain a lot of earth culture to Dr Davenforth, but then he will use idioms or proverbs that are typical in earth culture. Hope they continue with the series on Audible. I’ve read all the books. The narrators do a wonderful job.

Wonderful!!
I absolutely LOVE this series and these narrators!! I love this book I was so excited after I read this to see it was an audiobook! These narrators have made it to my top 5 favorites and I have to admit that I’ve listened to this book at least 5 times since I bought it as well as the next two in the series. I just love these characters and this wonderful world they live in. My kids love this series as well and since I listen to a lot of books while driving it’s always nice to have something the can listen to and enjoy!

Nice characters, great story line.
I have read plenty of "earthlings transported to a strange world stories" and this was a good version. Some stories get pretty dark but this author did not go to far to the dark side. it's a fun read and a grat listen. it was different in having male and female narrators. But was good. Sadly I suspect there will be no more audio versions.

Wonderful
I loved this mystery series. The narrators were great and made the book come to life. They both put a lot effort into it and I did not have a complaint or a suggestion that could have made it any better. The author wrote a great plot and wonderful characters. This will be a series a listen to many times. I hope the rest of the audiobooks in the series come quickly so I can get them.
