Publisher's summary

When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again.

His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

Now Alex has his book of spells, a pack of matches and four days to find out where the plague came from, or that authorities will hang the crime squarely on him.

great detective story

the story was fantastic with all the twists and turns. Vic Mignogna really killed it with his voice work and made the characters feel even more real.

Interesting

A little slow in spots but a really good story. Some of the plot twists surprised me, and that doesn’t happen much any more. I would recommend to anyone that likes ‘noir’ or a light mystery.

Perfect for Fans of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files

A well-written, thoroughly enjoyable, immersive, magical noir mystery. It's like the television series Supernatural starring Sam Spade from the Maltese Falcon. I discovered the author on BookTok and was intrigued by the concept of an arcane detective specializing in runewriting. My first adventure with this detective was not disappointing. I will definitely check out more titles in the series.

Good Book

This was a good story in an alternate world. I very much enjoyed this story and the characters peopling it. Narrator does a good job with the various characters voices and the entire storyline.

Unique, gritty urban fantasy

This is a fantastic entry into a new urban fantasy series. The narrator does a great job in bringing the series to life and keeps the pace moving and the suspense high. The story is gripping and entertaining. If you enjoy urban fantasy with honest characters that feels real, give this story a try.

1935 multiverse fantasy period piece with Nazis

Dan Willis wrote an entertaining pre-WW2 gumshoe story that involves a different take on magic, something that is always interesting when done right and this was done right. The author got the lingo and the vernacular down fairly well but the narrator voice for the protagonist wasn't near gruff enough to pull off referring the his secretary as "doll". Even so, the story was written well and while magic was used, it was mostly in support of the crime solving plot line. There were several sub-plots that didn't reveal themselves immediately along with several twists to keep one guessing.

Vic Mignogna performance was very good except for the minor flaw mentioned above.

For those who like a little magic mixed in with your whodunit, you should find this an enjoyable listen.

Weak performance on main character.

love the story and the characters are interesting. the voice of the main character ,Alex, however, sounds like a nervous child. Not a detective that knows his business. Would be better if his voice was stronger.
