About this listen

A wolf with three legs is still a wolf.

Javier Acosta Campos is a wounded warrior and wolf shifter who trains therapy dogs for other veterans with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. He’s just moved to Nocturne Falls to start a training program at a very quirky animal shelter, and he’s fallen stupid in love with the local veterinarian.

Medina Theron keeps telling herself she shouldn’t be thinking about men. Since her fiancé moved on to blonder pastures, she’s stayed busy as one of the only veterinarians in town who specializes in the treatment of magical creatures. But now that the new trainer at the animal rescue seems to always be around at just the right moment, he’s on her mind a lot.

When the remnants of the family she didn’t know she had drag her into a web of trouble, Medina and her new familiar need help. Thankfully, there’s a three-legged shifter on duty, and Javi means to keep her safe. Even from himself.

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

Great short & sweet! The end?

I very much enjoyed this short and sweet story. So many great pairings between our main couple, new familiar, lots of fun animals, and overcoming differences.
Due to the characters and happenings in the story, it's helpful to have read another of the author's entries into the Nocturne Falls Universe. The ending of this one though was odd in that it suggested two additional stories but then said it was the end of the author's contributions to the universe. Makes me sad if there won't be any new ones! The Nocturne Falls Universe gives us at least a little more time and characters in the town we all love and from the best narrator.

PTSD

This is the third NFU book I've listened to that has PTSD as part of the storyline and this one brings in the help that animals can provide. Kudos to the authors for their awareness and sensitivity to an issue that unfortunately pervades society today.

Great end to the bad guy in this story!

Cute story with POOR background research

I really enjoyed this story with the exception that the hero would have been a SERVICE dog trainer NOT a THERAPY dog trainer. It disheartened me that the author didn't take the time to learn the difference between the two. There are a lot of misnomers among the general public about the distinction. Inaccuracies like this help to sow confusion and make life more difficult for individuals who rely on service dogs to live a normal life.

Therapy dogs are dogs trained to help multiple people in settings such as hospitals or schools but are only allowed in non-pet friendly areas when specifically invited. Service dogs are trained to help a single individual with a major life limiting disability, such as the veterans with PTSD in this story. When fully trained and paired with their disabled handler they are legally medical equipment and have full public access rights (under ADA in the US, where the story is set - laws of course vary by country).

Having discrepancies like this perpetuated is damaging to veterans as well as other disabled personnel who utilize service dogs, because it makes it easier for unscrupulous individuals to bring untrained dogs into the public eye. Every bad experience in the public consciousness is one more hurdle an already disadvantaged person has to clear in order to live a independent and self-sufficient life.

I had a hard time finishing this story because the author didn't take the time to verify her facts prior to publication.

B.J. Harrison was as always a wonderful narrator.
