About this listen
From marketing maven to angel of the garbage district—the inspiring authorized biography of Maggie Gobran, the "Mother Teresa of Egypt".
Since 1997 Maggie Gobran and her organization, Stephen's Children, have been changing lives in Cairo's notorious zabala, or garbage slums. Her innovative, transformational work has garnered worldwide fame and multiple Nobel Prize nominations, but her full story has remained untold—until now. Best-selling authors Martin Makary and Ellen Vaughn chronicle Mama Maggie's surprising pilgrimage from privileged child to stylish businesswoman to college professor pondering God's call to change. She answered that call by becoming the modest figure in white who daily navigates piles of stinking trash, bringing hope to the poorest of the poor. Smart and savvy, as tough as she is tender, Maggie Gobran is utterly surrendered to her mission to the "garbage people" who captured her heart. At her request the book also spotlights the people she serves - the men, women, and children who prove every day what a little bit of help and a lot of love can do.

Story
Dr. Marty Makary is co-developer of the life-saving checklist outlined in Atul Gawande's best-selling The Checklist Manifesto. As a busy surgeon who has worked in many of the best hospitals in the nation, he can testify to the amazing power of modern medicine to cure. But he's also been a witness to a medical culture that routinely leaves surgical sponges inside patients, amputates the wrong limbs, and overdoses children because of sloppy handwriting. Over the last 10 years, neither error rates nor costs have come down, despite scientific progress.

Story
Elisabeth Elliot was a young missionary in Ecuador when members of a violent Amazonian tribe savagely speared her husband, Jim, and his four colleagues. Incredibly, prayerfully, Elisabeth took her toddler daughter, snakebite kit, Bible, and journal...and lived in the jungle with the stone-age people who killed her husband. In this authorized biography, Ellen Vaughn uses Elisabeth’s private, unpublished journals, and candid interviews with her family and friends, to paint the adventures and misadventures God used to shape one of the most influential women in modern church history.

Story
"In this life, I have lost. I lost my husband and best friend. My children lost their father. But Stephen didn't lose his life. He found it." Early one morning, just down the street from the local mosque, gunshots shattered the silence. A young American lay in a pool of blood, murdered by al-Qaeda extremists. When God called Emily and Stephen Foreman to bring the gospel to a Muslim nation where Christianity was illegal, they knew they were being called to a life of sacrifice. "We died before we came here" was their common refrain.

The Digital Age is all about change, but the need for true friendship never changes. We are designed for real engagement with others - for affirmation that goes beyond a simple "like" on social media, for connection over meals, for hope and excitement about the future. Above all, we need to be known and accepted for who we are.

Story
In a shallow light-speed world, how can we really know and be known by another person? How do we make true friends? The Digital Age is all about change, but the need for true friendship never changes. We are designed for real engagement with others - for affirmation that goes beyond a simple "like" on social media, for connection over meals, for hope and excitement about the future. Above all, we need to be known and accepted for who we are.

Story
Almost any parent you asked would tell you that they want their children to be happy, successful adults. But many of us forget (or never knew to begin with) that lasting personal joy is not necessarily found the way the world says it is - through reaching a certain socioeconomic status, having a certain job, buying a certain house, or having a certain amount in one's bank account. In fact, says Kristen Welch, author of Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World, personal satisfaction comes not from grabbing onto things but from holding them with an open hand and, very often, giving them away.

Get out! Run! We must leave this place! They are going to destroy this whole place! Go, children, run first! Go now! These were the final shouts nine-year-old Kim Phuc heard before her world dissolved into flames - before napalm bombs fell from the sky, burning away her clothing and searing deep into her skin. It's a moment forever captured, an iconic image that has come to define the horror and violence of the Vietnam War. Kim was left for dead in a morgue; no one expected her to survive the attack. Napalm meant fire, and fire meant death.

Paradigm Shift for Our Generation
If you are looking for inspiration to love the forgotten and cast aside poor as Jesus did, Mama Maggie is a modern day example of how we can do just that. Mama Maggie will make you look at life through a new lens and help you to realize that you truly cannot take the earthly riches of this world with you.
Highly recommended if you have that feeling that our culture needs to open our eyes to those in need, but haven't heard of someone that is actually doing it with their entire being.

The Story of a Remarkable Ministry
This is the story of Mama Maggie, as the children named her. Maggie was a a woman who grew up in affluence, yet she chose to give up the better things in life in order to provide for the lowly children living in the garbage slum. These children grew up in poverty and filth. They had no way to stop the abuse that many suffered, get an education, or find a way out of the garbage. Maggie and her staff have spent their lives helping these children, educating them, feeding them, and loving them. They are giving them a future and a hope.

Prayer multiplies the effort!
This true story of sacrifice and obedience is inspiring and challenging. The fact that God can take one life and multiply her efforts and His love is supernatural. The call the silence and prayer is a necessary challenge in a culture alive with so many “good things” to do and not enough time. God bless Mama Maggie and I pray the inspiration of her story will not return void in my life!

Convicting
The story was worth listening to. Not a compelling account but convicting and inspiring. The narration was as good as it could be in light of the writing. It's worth listening to as it is helpful in having a different view than what we see in the news about Christian/Muslim relations and the fact that many Muslims also suffer from the violent actions of other Muslims who purport to speak and act on behalf of ALL Muslims. It inspired me as a Christian to love ALL enemies of the Christian faith as "they do not know what they are doing." The account of Maggie 's work and love is heart-warming and motivational.
