About this listen

The wandering Cleric Chih returns home to the Singing Hills Abbey for the first time in almost three years, to be met with both joy and sorrow. Their mentor, Cleric Thien, has died, and rests among the archivists and storytellers of the storied abbey. But not everyone is prepared to leave them to their rest.

Because Cleric Thien was once the patriarch of Coh clan of Northern Bell Pass—and now their granddaughters have arrived on the backs of royal mammoths, demanding their grandfather's body for burial. Chih must somehow balance honoring their mentor's chosen life while keeping the sisters from the north from storming the gates and destroying the history the clerics have worked so hard to preserve.

But as Chih and their neixin Almost Brilliant navigate the looming crisis, Myriad Virtues, Cleric Thien's own beloved hoopoe companion, grieves her loss as only a being with perfect memory can, and her sorrow may be more powerful than anyone could anticipate . . .

Another beautiful tale in the story of the Singing Hills Clerics. Each one has been more enjoyable than the last, and all read together have fleshed out the characters and setting of this amazing place.

These are such a delight to listen to

Nghi Vo's Mammoths at the Gates is a contemplative exploration of the faces of change, including the pain of grief and loss, the metamorphic power of transformation. and the kaleidoscopic facets of memory. If your deepest memories have ever been shaken by a dissonant tale from another rememberer, you have felt the power of mammoths at the gates.

A beautiful study in memory, change, loss, and transformation

This is fast becoming one of my favorite fantasy series. Mammoths at the Gates gives the listener a view of the inner workings of Singing Hills. 10/10, highly recommend.

I adore this book series! the first two I adore especially and I can't wait for the next book. I bought this book on a whim in the Powells staff recommended fantasy novels, quickly read the back and said why not looks short I can manage it without much thought. normally I'm not much of a reader though I've always wanted to be, and makes it hard to read traditional books. now I wish all the books were so much long thouhh

I love this series!

This book has such an interesting dynamic between the new and the old and the in-between. It deals with numerous types of loss and grief - of friends, of childhood, of yourself, etc. It also has such a good message about loving deeply flawed people anyway, and how the people who know have lived other lives and are other people to the people in those lives.

dealing with all kinds of loss
