About this listen

The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history. From April 14 to April 26, 1865, the assassin, John Wilkes Booth, led Union cavalry and detectives on a wild 12-day chase through the streets of Washington, DC, across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness.

James L. Swanson's Manhunt is a fascinating tale of murder, intrigue, and betrayal. A gripping hour-by-hour account told through the eyes of the hunted and the hunters, this is history as you've never listened to it before.

Incredible story and narration, incorrect chapters and broken WhisperSync make Audible version frustrating!

The narrator did an amazing job of making this story come to life and I was impressed by the pacing and production quality. The absolute worst parts are when long chapters are split and thus improperly labeled and WhisperSync is totally broken. No matter where I am in the Kindle version, I listen here and then my Kindle shows bookmarks for Chapter 1 13minutes in, page 194 twice, and the Publisher’s Notes at the very end. It never synced properly and having to skim around between both to stay on track was horrible. At least the story was worth the effort!

Amazing!

Absolutely loved it! The narrator tells the story wonderfully. James L. Swanson does a remarkable job transporting the reader (or listener) inside the President's box at Ford's Theatre, and along for the fateful events that followed with remarkable detail. Highly recommend to history buffs and lovers of suspense alike.

Comprehensive of how catch Lincoln’s assassin.

Narration perfect:
appropriate voice quality for this material…female teeny weeny voice clearly not…adult woman’s voice would be fine;~
Precise pronunciation and enunciation flawless…prime example of how get articulation right;
Cadence, rhythm, varied pauses spot on;
Speech rate perfectly calibrated…slightly longer pauses at critical moments combined with in other instances are enhances drama, junctures greatly help emphasizing shifts in
Overall, just marvelous

Content:
Meticulous descriptions of settings, mood of the communities, interesting character development, intriguing ideas about how the principals felt and thought.Of course, the bulk of content is focused actions taken to track Booth down, attempt to take booth alive. Booth would not cooperate. Cavalry threatened to burn Booth still refused to surrender. Calvary lit the barn on fire. The flames shined on him. Someone, not sure who, dealt him a mortal wound. The bullet went through his spinal cord. Booth died shortly thereafter.
