Publisher's summary

Marcus Aurelius was an outstanding person and Emperor of Ancient Rome. He was far more concerned with ways of thinking than with warfare. Being a small boy he applied himself to task with education. Marcus preferred others over himself, putting his own welfare aside for the good of other people.

His nature is obvious in his kindness and consideration for others; but his sharp intelligence is also evident in his writing and in his excellence in jurisprudence. People called him a Great Emperor and a Philosopher King.

Inside you will listen about:

  • The Young Marcus
  • Training in Oratory
  • Antoninus's reign
  • Antoninus's death
  • Philosopher turned Emperor
  • Marcus and Lucius's reign
  • The Slumbering Tiber
  • The War with the Parthians
  • The Antonine plague
  • The youngest Consul in Roman history
  • The End of the Pax Romana
  • And much more!

This audiobook is a chronological biography of his life. Its aim is to not only describe the historical events of his life, but also to delve into his character. It explores who the man really was, especially the contrast between the high station thrust upon him and the simplicity he longed for.

Clarity and pace.

Enjoyed every moment and will certainly play this many times. Branagh's pace was exceptional, never lagging so interest never lagged. Understanding that silent reading is faster than reading out loud, but still many of the narrations are so over dramatized and slow I just switch them off and read myself. Not the case with Branagh's Heart of Darkness, most enjoyable!

Five stars

My favorite part of the entire book is when he ponders on inner peace. Many would seek peace retiring to a calm village, a seaside home, or in the mountains far from the busy cities. Marcus argues he who has not inner peace in himself wherever, will never have inner peace whatever.

good education

This was a good book that gave me a nice understanding of an emperor I did not know a lot about. I purchased the book because I was interested in Marcus Aurelius having read some of this great quotes. I was not disappointed but would have liked to have heard a bit more about his writings.

Good brief history

This history is a good short history of Marcus Aurelius. I’d hoped to hear more of his philosophy.

Good history

This is a treasure of time thoughts on Life, Living and human values. It echoes the bible. The ancient vedic scriptures of India, the teachings of the Buddha and the like. A powerful Roman Emperor writes to himself on the essence of life

Wonderful History

The childhood and early adulthood of Marcus Aurelius is well described, including his education, his belief in Stoicism, and his experience with the world of Roman politics. Hadrian designated Marcus to become emperor, and the volume describes the logic nicely. Under the emperorship of Antoninus, Marcus was kept in Rome, involved in administrative tasks. He was never really trained or developed any experience with respect to war and command of the Roman legions. Thus, he had to learn while doing later. We learn of his family life and of his son, the horrific Commodus, one of the most wretched of emperors. If one be interested in Marcus Aurelius the person, the philosopher, and the emperor, this book would be well worth.
