About this listen

"This book is a wonderful introduction to one of history's greatest figures: Marcus Aurelius. His life and this book are a clear guide for those facing adversity, seeking tranquility and pursuing excellence." — Ryan Holiday, bestselling author of The Obstacle is the Way and The Daily Stoic

The life-changing principles of Stoicism taught through the story of its most famous proponent.

Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was the final famous Stoic philosopher of the ancient world. The Meditations, his personal journal, survives to this day as one of the most loved self-help and spiritual classics of all time. In How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, psychotherapist Donald Robertson weaves stories of Marcus’s life from the Roman histories together with explanations of Stoicism—its philosophy and its psychology—to enlighten today’s listeners. He discusses Stoic techniques for coping with everyday problems, from irrational fears and bad habits to anger, pain, and illness.

How to Think Like a Roman Emperor takes listeners on a transformative journey along with Marcus, following his progress from a young noble at the court of Hadrian—taken under the wing of some of the finest philosophers of his day—through to his reign as emperor of Rome at the height of its power. Robertson shows how Marcus used philosophical doctrines and therapeutic practices to build emotional resilience and endure tremendous adversity, and guides listeners through applying the same methods to their own lives.

Combining remarkable stories from Marcus’s life with insights from modern psychology and the enduring wisdom of his philosophy, How to Think Like a Roman Emperor puts a human face on Stoicism and offers a timeless and essential guide to handling the ethical and psychological challenges we face today.

Wow! Perhaps the most important book I've read.

I am definitely going to be relistening to it several times.

Stoicism is power over oneself.

The author did a masterful job of telling a riveting story of the life of Marcus Aurelius blended with stoic philosophy and modern psychotherapeutic techniques such as CBT.

And a real BONUS, the author has a good voice and he does a top-notch job on the audiobook.

100% good af🤯👏

This book is an absolute must read. Plain language. Relevant background — not just the whole “how stoicism got started” rigmarole. Anecdotes relevant to Stoicism and modern life.

He truly puts this philosophy to a modern and more tangible feel. I’ve read Pigliucci, Irvine, Holiday, and some other author there I can’t remember, and went I tell you. That this book. Is good... I mean it’s REALLY good.

I like the authors take on Marcus and how it relates to psychotherapy.

I dislike nothing.

The Scottish accent is a nice difference.

I am more virtuous after listening to this book

You can become a better person. That's the thesis of this book, with the phantom of Marcus Aurelius becoming alive with his life painted for you in this book.

Fantastic audio performance by Donald Robertson, and a great book to read before reading the Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. This is so much in-depth content that is really, really approachable to someone who is just beginning their journey into philosophy and stoicism and for those who are well into their stride to become better people.

I never thought that I could get a living, breathing feel for Marcus Aurelius but this book really does provide you with the man's guiding principles in life. Donald Robertson also provides a lot of therapeutic practices for you as a reader to experience in your personal life, so that you can come away with a more virtuous outlook.

A work of a virtuoso, well done

Enlightening

This was my first book on stoicism and I’m impressed. It covers a wide range of topics with enough depth to educate but not go so far down the rabbit hole to lose me. I’m now exploring stoicism further.
The narrator does an excellent job reading this book and keeping me engaged.

Good Work

Great exploration of the general stoic principles through the eyes of Marcus Aurelius. The narration was excellent, the book contains great stories in connection with stoic ideas, and has practical steps for starting to implement them. Highly recommend !
