About this listen

One of the most highly acclaimed and best-selling novels of 1991, Mariette in Ecstasy inspires even the most discriminating listener to some degree of reverence. This captivating story of faith and divine madness may move you to examine your own belief system. Since the tender age of four, Mariette Baptiste has had visions of her Savior. Now, at 17, she is entering the convent to dedicate her life to Him. At first, she is welcomed and admired. Then she begins to bleed from stigmata, and the villagers regard her as a saint. Emotions from the other Sisters of the Crucifixion range from admiration, to jealousy, to hatred. Readers will be stunned by the conclusion to Mariette’s journey of faith. Recipient of an Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, Ron Hansen writes sensuous and compelling prose that is pure pleasure to listen to. Barbara Caruso’s expressive voice beautifully conveys the rhythms reminiscent of haiku that the author so skillfully intersperses throughout.

Beautiful writing clarifies a complex character

Beautifully written and a story that doesn’t give tidy explanations about the problem of Mariette’s experience. Was she a victim or a trickster or a beneficiary of something wonderful? Taken at her word, the latter is my answer, despite all the trials it put her through. A complicated character but written so well that it was not confusing, and translates well to the Audible format. This is something that many works cannot overcome - at least for me. A weird tale with many ideas or characters is usually easier for me with a paper book, so i can check back and see what’s led up to the current point. But Hansen’s writing and Caruso’s naration make it work so well.

Fascinating

If you could sum up Mariette in Ecstasy in three words, what would they be?

Riveting, Mysterious and well done.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mariette. She was a simple young girl who had mysterious experiences and it was difficult to really determine if it was psychological phenomena or true devotional experiences.

What does Barbara Caruso bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She had a very distinct way of talking and she could distinguish the characters by the different tones of speaking.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction to the book but I found it fascinating because of the nature of the topic which is faith and how it gets expressed. Also how some faith experiences are manifested and what the differences are between stigmata and somatic conditions.

Any additional comments?

The book was very interesting and the ending a bit surprising but good.
