About this listen

Mark is a Jew writing for a predominantly Gentile audience in Rome. Written during a period of intense persecution under the Roman emperor Nero in 64-68 B.C., Mark offers an urgent message for a community in crisis. With its fast start (“Beginning the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Son of God... as it is written in Isaiah the prophet”), Mark hits the ground running, and he doesn’t slow down until the final episode at the end, in which the women who see Jesus’ empty tomb say nothing, for they were terrified." Mark’s Gospel is a clarion call to action. Master story teller, Dr. Bill Creasy, sounds the trumpet!

Editorial reviews

Mark writes the gospel of Mark to the Roman elites during a time of intense Christian persecution. In a concise outline, he tells the story of Jesus, as an adult through to his death, as a call to action. Dr. Bill Creasy partners with Logos Bible Institute to present this series of lectures on the Bible. With years of experience as a professor, Dr. Creasy feels at home in front of a group. He takes a casual tone and adds his own modern analogies to make this lesson fun. You don't need to be a bible scholar to enjoy this smart series; the lectures are approachable for everyone.

For me, a Bible Study with Dr Bill Creasy is like “Show & Tell” in the early days of my schooling. Thru his personal travels, life-long friends and experiences in the same old world settings of his Bible Study books, he brings the subject he is teaching to life in a way that opens your imagination and puts you in that ancient time and place... creating a special memory you take with you as you continue to explore the Bible.

Another fascinating trip thru a Gospel... this time, the book of Mark

Dr. Creasy takes him time and does not rush through the verse by verse analysis.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and listen to over and over.

This is another great lecture series from Dr. Bill Creasy. He is always incredibly insightful and engaging. He often supplements the material with personal stories which are relevant and interesting. He has taken several trips to Israel and the Middle East where he visits the locations depicted in the Bible and he shares those first hand accounts which enables him to take you back to that point in time that the scripture is talking about.

Loved this lecture series!

Overall I love Dr. Creasy. I highly recommend his audio books on the Bible. On my second time now listening to this one I noticed that his arguments and explanations weren't as solid as his other books. I thought that he could've done a little better, and now that he's just finished the 3rd edition it will probably be more seasoned than this one (2nd edition). Also the production editing was off. The last 25 minutes of the audio book is an explanation of Exodus and setting up the book of Numbers. Which is fine in general but I'm sure that wasn't meant to be included in mark lol.

Others are better

If you have not listened to "Matthew" yet, listen to that first then listen to "Mark".
Dr. Creasy does a remarkable job narrating "Mark". He is very indepth and entertaining. He provides the history, geography, and theology of the time Mark was written. Additional, he provides ancient Israeli context. All of which helps to uncover the mystery of the Gospel.
Please note, this is a lecture so there is audience feedback which makes it even more entertaining. since it is a lecture, there are visuals alluded to that we can see.

I also posted this on Amazon.com. This series contains the audio from class lectures by Dr. Bill Creasy.

Dr. Creasy covers each book verse-by-verse, providing context to the material by explaining other passages in the Bible that may relate to a passage under study, with descriptions of corresponding historical events and the geography and their relationship to the passage, as well as anecdotes from his travels or study. I find it extremely helpful to study the Bible in context with geography and history.

As explained in the opening lesson on Genesis, this study starts with Genesis in the Old Testament, then moves to Matthew in the New Testament, then Exodus and Leviticus in the Old Testament, then back to Mark in the New Testament, and so on. Dr. Creasy does this because 1) if covered in weekly segments, as done in his class, it would be in year 5 before he got to Matthew, and 2) to help show the relationship between Old Testament and New Testament.

According to the syllabus I received from Dr. Creasy (he sometimes deviates from this in class), Mark is the fifth in the Logos Bible Study series, preceded by Leviticus and followed by Numbers. Mark has 16 chapters, and the study is comprised of 14 lessons. Total time - 10 hours, 17 minutes.

Excellent Bible Study
