About this listen

Well known for her best-selling series Kitty Norville, Carrie Vaughn moves to science fiction with Martians Abroad, a novel with great crossover appeal.

Polly Newton has one single-minded dream: to be a starship pilot and travel the galaxy. Her mother, the director of the Mars Colony, derails Polly's plans when she sends Polly and her genius twin brother, Charles, to Galileo Academy on Earth. Homesick and cut off from her plans for her future, Polly cannot seem to fit in to life on Earth. Strange, unexplained, dangerous coincidences centered on their high-profile classmates begin piling up. Charles may be right - there's more going on than would appear, and the stakes are high. With the help of Charles, Polly is determined to find the truth, no matter the cost.

Not since Heinlein's "juveniles" has a YA Sci-Fi story had such punch! Thank you Carrie, can we have another?

Move over Robert Heinlein.

I was so disappointed in the ending. Vaughn had built a great world and great characters, but so many things were missing. About 3/4 theu I started researching a sequel as there was no way it could wrap up smoothly but couldn’t find anything. The slap dash ending raised even more unanswered questions. Good editing and a tighter plot, or a more expansive plot - there was certainly room story wise- would have helped this book tremendously.

Not quite YA, not a finished plot

Interesting story to start off. At some point in the story. The situation became predictable. Too bad the story wasn’t ended. Would be great to see to or three Volumes to get the characters interesting.

Cute. Several times I had to remind myself it was a young adult book. Fun story, exciting in parts. But very young dialogue and situations. Gossip Girl in space? Maybe.

While listening to this book, I realized that I prefer space anthropology over space battles. I've always said Star Trek over Star Wars, still unsure of the best way to put that. I really enjoyed seeing regular Earth activities from the eye of a Martian. To avoid spoilers, I will simply say, the field trips are very well written.

Up to the final chapters I'd give the book 4 stars, but I listened to the ending while playing a space video game and got so anxious. I figure that's a good book.

I just finished "Martians Abroad" and my only disappointment is that it is over! I love how Vaughn makes the worlds she writes so real and detailed with little things like reminding you of gravity conversions in a way that is part of the story and not just pandering to the need to shove some science in there that some authors seem to cave to. Vaughn also writes a variety of character types very well. These are real three dimensional people. Narrator Cobb took hold of those well written concepts and pulled them off the page very nicely. Whether you are looking for a book for a young adult reader or for yourself as a fan of sci fi, I highly recommend this book!

Fantastic story!

I really do hope this story appeals to 21st century teens. We are in desperate need of young people who look forward to solving real problems in our world, instead of fighting their way out of a made up dystopian future.

Adventurous teens in space!

I feel that this book has a nice mystery feel to it and the ending while not surprising to me, made the story work really well. So check this book out its worth the credit.

Enjoyable

I listened to this because this author is going to be at an upcoming convention. I found this book enjoyable with a unique view on some space colonization tropes.

Young Adult Sci fi - without a bunch of romance
