About this listen

The universe is a dangerous place.

When you’re out in the black wilds of space you might encounter warring pirate factions, rogue planets, or even find yourself on the wrong side of the Royal Union, the ruling government of the Triumph galaxy. Unfortunately for Halstaan Cross, it's all three.

Halstaan is the chief engineer of a long-range rescue/salvage ship that patrols the dangerous frontier. He is relied upon to keep the ship running and ensure that salvage and cargo is rendered safe and stowed without incident. The crew counts on him with their lives and their livelihood. But he is also hiding a dark secret that may threaten the whole crew.

Ro Javlin is a young man from a remote planet setting off into the universe for the first time. Bound by duty and pressured by his community, he reluctantly accepts a commission to attend the Royal Military Academy.

When Ro’s path unexpectedly intersects with Halstaan, the two are thrust into the midst of a discovery that will affect the entire galaxy and change the course of their lives forever.

Definitely worth reading

I listen to a lot of audiobooks so I may be more critical than some. It was definitely a good read and I would continue with the series, but it is not 5 star material when compared to some of the other series I listen to.

kept me wanting more...

I found the cadence of the narrator off sometimes...but for the story it was engrossing and kept me wanting more. Grab any form of this book and you won't regret it. (FM Maple Valley).

Total YA

If the author is going to write a YA novel they should let us know in advance. That being said it’s an ok story but I didn’t finish.

The Adventure

I liked the narrator and the whole storyline . I had different expectations of the story but I ended up liking where the journey went on to and I’m looking forward to the next book,

Fantastic Debut Novel!

For a debut sci-fi novel, Young hits all the right threads here. What’s not to like? I was impressed with the pacing - not perfect, what is? - but very well done. I really enjoyed the character development, the action, the pain, the rescues and the tech/world-building. There are some critiques I could mention but are definitely overshadowed by the heart and spirit of this book. This book has soul! These are flawed characters that have an actual moral compass and try to recompense for their past. It’s the story of humanity. I love it. And I think you will too if you give it a shot.

A fresh start to a new series.

There is great character development and the story keeps you hooked for hours. I could do without the melodramatic scenes, it just drags on. Kill the bugger and move on. With all that said I look forward to the next book.

Awesome start to a new Sci-Fi Series

As an Audiobook addict, I have fallen into boredom recently because for some reason, the more popular narrators have drastically slowed releases compared to prior years. I am not sure why, but it hasn't been good for me. The biggest hurdle is that other books don't get as many people "trying" them out or even getting many, if any reviews... which makes dropping a credit on an unknown book a very big gamble. However, I gave this one a shot and was pleasantly surprised! The narration is good, and the story is very good. You know you have an awesome and rare audiobook when you realize that it is 7:00 AM and you have been listening to the book non-stop since 7:00 PM the evening before, and you have no urge to stop. This was one of those books. Sure.. it has a few issues... but so does every first book in a new series. This is a good space opera, and as an avid fan of "hard" sci-fi, I never found myself rolling my eyes at scientifically impossible scenarios and technology, and even when those did show up, it was never done in a way that made you really question it. It had a lot of surprises, making me want to know what happens next, rather than being one of those books that you can easily predict what happens next. Forgive my review if it is a bit hard to follow, I did listen to 80% of this book straight through without sleep :)

I wish.....

Despite being incredibly melodramatic there were some enjoyable parts but alas, also some parts where I wanted to shut the audio off because it was so absurdly ridiculous at how childish Ro was acting. Maybe it was written for younger audiences and I just couldn’t relate. Of we’ll, whichever it is, I won’t be awaiting the sequel.
