About this listen

The unbeatable master of suspense returns, in a wickedly wayward case of artists, models, and murder. If larceny is good for the soul, Palm Beach must be confidence heaven - so discovers Lawrence Sanders's sleuth-about-town Archy McNally in his third boffo baffler, McNally's Risk. Hired by a formidable matron to investigate the shadowy bona fides of her bubble-headed son's beloved, Archy is wowed by the enigmatic innamorata's purity and pulchritude. But when the artist for whom she posed is killed, McNally's job takes on a decidedly dangerous turn, and he begins to suspect the demure damsel might be both a poser and a poseur. Fighting his way through copious deaths and fiendish scams, Archy pieces together elements of a strange and grisly puzzle, including: a sealed letter containing a horrifying secret; a nude dancer who knows more than she reveals; a missing portrait someone would kill for; and a butterfly tattoo in a very private place, which could be the key to the murder spree.

Lawrence Sanders's latest Palm Beach thriller fairly sizzles with greed, glitz, gals, and gore. And it proves, once again, that Archy McNally is, as Cosmopolitan described him, "as amusing and rich as Dorothy Sayers' great creation, Lord Peter Wimsey".

Fun, Light-Hearted Romp Among the Palm Beach Elite

This is a fun entry in the Archie McNally series set amongst the rich of Palm Beach and a fumbling detective (Archie). It has the whole cast of eccentric characters of this long-running series in rare form. Of course rich people don't work with the police (even if it's murder), so everyone has to play a detecting role. You need to suspend a fair amount of belief here. The McNally franchise blends a lot of comedy with a mystery motif. It is getting a little dated (the technology used by the characters in the book is now ancient); so think of it as a 1970's period piece. The comedy outweighs the plot; so jump in and enjoy something very unserious!

I really like Archy McNally

If you could sum up McNally's Risk in three words, what would they be?

Very relaxing book for a mystery...

What other book might you compare McNally's Risk to and why?

The JP Beaumont series by JA Jance - also a very relaxing mystery series with lots of humour and tongue in cheek.

Have you listened to any of Victor Bevine’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

only in this series, I think.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not an EXTREME reaction but a somewhat pleasant one. I fancy Archy McNally.

Any additional comments?

For mystery readers who don't mind their books a little bit dated (no mobile phones or internet here!!!) and who likes lots of sprinklings of humour, a very laid back central character and style of writing taken even further by the excellent performance of Victor Bevine.

The narrator, Victor Bevine, is a delight to the ears

This is a fantastic story, and the narration makes it perfect. I wish every single book on audible was narrated by this guy.

Archie McNally's A No Risk Choice: Again!

Victor Bevine's interpretation of Lawrence Sanders playboy detective is note perfect. Neither Sanders nor Bevine ever drop out of character. Good thing. Archie's one helluva character.

You will forget this plot faster than you'll hunger after a Chinese meal. And you'll enjoy it just as much. Archie exists to entertain in his time-warped way. Once again Sanders invents a drawing room mystery right out of the 1920s-30s with characters who act and talk as if rock and roll never happened. But they do it on cell phones and computers.

There's only one warning here... wait a while between McNally stories. They're a lot like way-rich deserts and you need recovery time. I'll get the next McNally, a few novels from now, maybe when I want a good listen on my way to Hilton Head this summer. Sander's has created the perfect companion for a long ride... his name's Archie McNally. And there's no risk in listening to Victor Bevine bring him to life.

Enjoy.

Wonderful!

Lawrence Sanders and Archy McNally make a very entertaining pair. A great addition to an already beautifully crafted series

Narrator not to my liking

I would not purchase another book with this narrator. I’m glad I know the name.
