International best-selling author Andrew M. Greeley is hailed by the Los Angeles Times as "a fascinating novelist" with a rare, possibly unmatched point of view. In this baffling mystery, the unpopular and incompetent Bishop Gus Quill is assigned to the Archdiocese of Chicago despite loud protests. When he disappears while riding the L Train, it falls to Bishop Blackie Ryan to find him.

Story
Madison is booming with dreamers and drifters, visionaries and entrepreneurs. Among them is Sydney Richardson, the daughter of a cop who died on these streets and now the proud, stressed-out owner of Hush Money, one of the city's top new restaurants. Like everyone else in town, Sydney is shocked when Madison's popular mayor - a crusty, charismatic man of the people - is shot to death in his own home. But the news hits especially close to home for Sydney because one of her own stands accused of the brutal crime. Sydney's the one person that Wanda Fields, a quiet, hardworking waitress and single mother, can think to call after her arrest.

Story
For all the monumental documentation that Watergate generated - uncountable volumes of committee records, court transcripts, and memoirs - it falls at last to a novelist to perform the work of inference (and invention) that allows us to solve some of the scandal’s greatest mysteries - who did erase those eighteen-and-a-half minutes of tape? - and to see this gaudy American catastrophe in its human entirety. In Watergate, Thomas Mallon conveys the drama and high comedy of the Nixon presidency through the urgent perspectives of seven characters we only thought we knew.

Pony's One Trick's Gotten Old
Archie McNally's ridden in the car with me to vacations. This was the fifth, and maybe the last time. From the begining, the plot & why-dunnit's were obvious as a gold-digger's cleavage. Mr. Sander's imagination for mystery's gone flaccid. And Archie McNally, a young man trapped in the body of an old man, has become... well... old.
Worse yet, Sander's introduced a new character in "Trial" and that Binky guy's... well insufferable. His every appearance in the story wrenched me out of it, totally aware that Sanders was trying out writers' tricks. I'd rather he learn on someone else's Audible credit.
As usual, Victor Bevine's slick talent for doing voices, particularly Consuela's (Archie's girlfriend) almost saved this book... But after 4 other Archy adventures, well new words pasted over the identical melody were as boring, sometimes as painful, as hearing a song you once liked, played too many times.
Maybe a couple of years from now I'll give Archy McNally another visit. And maybe I'll replay an old recording I grew tired of... Maybe...
